Video: How Does the New Toyota Land Cruiser Handle Camping?
Overlanding means different things to different people. Some might count tossing a pillow in the backseat as participation, while others feel the need to justify spending $500,000 on a house on wheels with military-spec capabilities.
While I’d love to be in the latter category, I’m closer to the former—whether I like it or not. And I know a lot of you reading this are, too.
For those of us somewhere in the middle, there’s a dizzying array of options for how to approach overlanding, most of which, unsurprisingly, revolve around how much money you want to spend. Do you buy something new and load it up with off-road accessories, only to realize six months later that it’s only been to the grocery store? Do you grab an old beater, fix up some of the mechanicals, and send it as far as possible? Or do you look for something newer that can double as a daily driver while giving you room to grow into it over time?
Here in Connecticut, my closest taste of true overlanding is realistically a few days of car camping with my buddies on the infield of Lime Rock Park’s fast 1.5-mile road course. Their vehicle of choice for the hobby is obvious—they all own Land Cruisers. So, to see how the new one stacks up, I asked Toyota for some help to temporarily join the LC club.
