Big V-8 weapons are returning to the Detroit Truck Wars. Unshackled from government regulations, the Ram 1500 has brought back its V-8 while Ford's F-150 is offering a 700-horsepower, supercharged V-8 on all trims.Now it's Chevrolet's turn with the new, fifth-generation Silverado.The North America-assembled truck leans into its V-8 lineup with more-powerful 5.7-liter and 6.6-liter pushrod engines to complement its trusty 2.7-liter turbo-4 cylinder and 3.0-liter diesel 6-cylinder. Silverado is a rolling condo on four wheels that is as comfortable at the country club and off-road park as it is at the worksite.The Silverado lineup sold 580,368 trucks in 2025, a third of them Heavy Duty pickups. Digital tech dominates the interior, including a class-leading 16.3-inch center display and 12.2-inch instrument display standard on all seven trims: Work Truck, Silverado, Custom, Custom Trail Boss, Trail Boss, ZR2 and High Country.Leaning into GM's autonomous-driving push, Silverado also options Super Cruise for hands-free driving.The Chevy's familiar, muscular design continues in the new-gen truck. Three cab options — Regular, Double or Crew Cab — can be married to one of three beds — short, standard or long. They sit on a ladder frame widely acclaimed as the nimblest chassis in segment.The front end gets a major redesign with mid-fascia headlights topped by "eyebrow" LED running lights. Want more? A third, 11-inch dash screen is available — just like a luxurious Mercedes or Jeep Grand Wagoneer. The base, 2.7-liter turbo-four engine will likely be on offer, married to a 10-speed transmission that is common to all powertrains. The standard non-Work Truck trim is now called simply Silverado.Option four-wheel-drive and the Z71 package comes standard, bringing with it capability like skid plates, hill descent control and off-road suspension.You'll know the Custom trim by its dual exhaust and 20" Technical Gray machine-faced wheels. Custom Trail Boss, meanwhile, is an entry point into Silverado's expansive off-road lineup to feed consumer taste. Custom Trail Boss brings a two-inch suspension lift.Trail Boss. Chevy turns up the temperature with more expressive, feature-rich models. Value takes a backseat to capability. Tail Boss pairs mechanical capability with matching visual cues. An off-road hood and 34-inch all-terrain tires give it an athletic presence without stepping up to the pricier, king-of-the-dirt ZR2.AdvertisementAdvertisementInside, Trail Boss is distinguished by Torch Red-edged seatbelts and upscale materials.ZR2 and ZR2 Bison. Silverado doesn't compete against 700-plus horsepower mega-trucks like the Ford Raptor R or Ram 1500 TRX, but the ZR2 bros can sling dirt with the best of them.For 2027, ZR2 sports 35-inch all-terrain tires plus standard, front/rear E-lockers for when the off-roading really gets gnarly. Race-proven Multimatic dampers absorb the woops on high-speed desert runs — assuming owners find a desert in the Midwest.The exterior telegraphs the vehicle's capabilities with a power-dome hood. Inside, drivers are surrounded by racy carbon-fiber accents while scanning off-road data in jumbotron screens.AdvertisementAdvertisementWant more capability? If the ZR2 rules the Outback, than High Country is an urban cowboy.Larded with comfort and sophistication, High Country is luxury fashion. Highlights include 22-inch After Midnight machine-faced wheels, crisp detailing and upgraded badging. Even the fascia gets the red carpet treatment with a Tritan Satin grille.Inside, High Country passengers lounge in leather thrones under the pickups' first panoramic sunroof.
