BYD continues to be the best-selling electric vehicle (EV) brand in Malaysia for the month of September 2025 with 1,028 units, which brings its year-to-date (YTD) total to 8,417 units. The Chinese brand has stayed at the number one spot since January this year, and last month’s figure marks the sixth time it has crossed 1,000 registrations in a single month.

At present, BYD offers seven models, with the latest being the Seal 6 EV that went on sale in late September. By comparison, Proton only sells the eMas 7, with the eMas 5 currently open for order taking with an estimated starting price of RM60k. In spite of this, Proton’s continues to stay in second place in the top 20 list with 757 units registered in September 2025 for a YTD total of 6,212 units.

Coming in third is Tesla with 685 units (3,847 YTD), which is the brand’s second best result this year after the surge to 1,075 units in May. The podium spots are unchanged from August 2025, but there are some notable changes after this point.

As a start, Zeekr registrations more than tripled to 293 units, no doubt bolstered by deliveries of the 7X that was launched near the end of August. This is the brand’s best result so far this year and brings its YTD total to 972 units.

Xpeng also saw an increase in EV registrations to 137 units, which allows it to hold on to fifth place and sees its YTD total go up to 979 units. In sixth place, we have BMW with 98 units (1,215 YTD), while Porsche climbed from tenth to seventh with 78 units (545 YTD). As is always the case, these figures are likely to include recon units, which the road transport department (JPJ) includes in its vehicle registration data.

Next up, BYD’s premium sub-brand, Denza, gained one spot to eighth with 63 units (850 YTD), followed by Chery in ninth with 60 units (554 YTD) and Leapmotor in tenth with 53 units (278 YTD). Beyond the top ten, we have Volvo in 11th with 47 units (418 YTD), while MINI went down one spot to take 12th with 44 units (471 YTD).

New to the top 20 list is iCaur, which launched its first model, the 03, in early September. Last month saw 34 units of the electric off-road-themed SUV being registered, with its YTD total currently at 37 units – this likely includes cars registered for marketing or testing purposes. Also with 34 units in September 2025 is Honda, which only sells the e:N1 and sees its YTD total rise to 76 units.

Moving on, we have MG in 15th with 32 units (439 YTD), followed by Great Wall Motor in 16th with 20 units (276 YTD) and Mercedes-Benz in 17th with 15 units (542 YTD), the latter seeing its lowest number of EV registrations this year. The top three is made of up Dongfeng in 18th with 14 units (100 YTD), smart in 19th with its lowest figure this year at 7 units (186 YTD) and Audi in 20th with six units (54 YTD).
