Latest vehicle registration data from Malaysia’s Road Transport Department (JPJ) showed that EV registrations in Malaysia reached 5,894 units in April 2026, up 103.8% year-on-year. Chinese automakers have now become the dominant force in the local market. Seven of the top 10 EV brands by sales in April were Chinese brands. Proton, the Malaysian automaker partly owned by Geely, ranked first with 2,408 EV registrations during the month. After Geely acquired a 49.9% stake in Proton in 2017, the two companies began collaborating on platforms, supply chains and localized manufacturing. Geely Xingyuan (Rebadged as Proton e.MAS 5 in Malaysia) The e.MAS lineup currently sold in Malaysia is essentially based on Geely models adapted into right-hand-drive localized versions. The best-selling EV in April, the Proton e.MAS 5, is the Malaysian version of the Geely Galaxy Xingyuan sold in China. The model registered 1,772 units in April, significantly ahead of competitors in the local market. Cumulative sales for the year reached 8,473 units. For comparison, Proton’s total EV registrations for all of 2025 stood at only 9,549 units, meaning the e.MAS 5 alone has nearly matched the brand’s entire EV sales volume from last year. Notably, the Geely Galaxy Xingyuan is also performing strongly in China. Data showed the model sold 34,727 units domestically in April, ranking first in China’s passenger vehicle retail sales for the month. Top 10 best-selling NEV models in April BYD ranked second in Malaysia with 1,413 registrations, up 60% month-on-month. It was also the only other brand besides Proton to surpass 1,000 monthly EV registrations in April. The BYD Atto 3 ranked second in Malaysia’s EV sales charts with 778 units, while the Seal 6, Sealion 7 and Atto 2 also entered the top 10. Meanwhile, brands including Chery, Zeekr, XPeng and Leapmotor are also accelerating their EV expansion in Malaysia. Zeekr followed with 357 units, including 303 deliveries of the Zeekr 7X alone. XPeng posted 150 sales, marking its best monthly performance in Malaysia this year. In contrast, Tesla’s presence in the Malaysian market continued to weaken. Tesla registered only 172 vehicles in April, ranking fifth overall.
