Top 20 brands in Sept 2025 – Perodua, Proton, Toyota stay top three; Chery up to fifth; Tesla rises to ninth

The road transport department (JPJ) has updated its vehicle registration data up until September 30, 2025, so let’s see how car brands performed last month. Unsurprisingly, Perodua continues to lead the pack with 23,394 units for the month, which brings its year-to-date (YTD) total pass the 250,000-unit mark at 255,094 units.

With 12,572 units registered, Proton took the second spot and broke through the 100,000-unit barrier with a YTD total of 110,150 units. Occupying the final podium spot is Toyota in third with 10,380 units, bringing its YTD total to 90,871 units.

Meanwhile, Honda took the fourth spot with 4,564 units (51,321 YTD), followed by Chery that climbed one spot with 1,122 units (9,042 YTD) to fifth place. Mitsubishi also gained ground to take sixth with 1,073 units (10,280 YTD), with Omoda | Jaecoo displaced to seventh with 1,063 units (13,582 YTD).

BYD is the final brand to cross 1,000 units in September 2025, with its 1,028 units (8,417 YTD) enabling it to hold on to eighth place. Next comes Tesla, which shot up the list to ninth place with 685 units (3,847 YTD), while Mazda stays tenth with 678 units (6,261 YTD).

Outside the top ten, we have Isuzu in 11th with 579 units (4,781 YTD), Mercedes-Benz in 12th with 574 units (6,866 YTD), BMW in 13th with 567 units (5,652 YTD) and Great Wall Motor in 14th with 551 units (3,886 YTD). Nissan maintained the 15th spot with 498 units (4,838 YTD), while Lexus dropped a few spots to 16th with 479 units (4,476 YTD).

The final four brands in the top 20 list are similar to what was seen in August 2025, with Jetour in 17th with 322 units (1,497 YTD), Ford in 18th with 316 units (3,698 YTD) and Porsche in 20th with 251 units (1,977 YTD). The change here is MINI, which misses out on the top 20 as a result of Zeekr entering the list with the highest number of registrations in a single month at 293 units. This is good for 19th place and a YTD total of 972 units.
