SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — Watching the number on the pump climb and climb can be alarming, but there are plenty of tips and tricks out there to help you squeeze every mile out of your gallons.According to Nick Jarmusz of AAA, one of the easiest things to do to save gas is to check your tire pressure.“Having low inflation on your tires connects right to the engine. It will need to work a little bit harder to move the car, so you want to make sure your tires are properly inflated and not over-inflated,” said Jarmusz. “You want to be right at what that recommended level is when the tires are cold.”AdvertisementAdvertisementStory continues belowTop Story: Saturday in the Park announces 2026 headliner, moreYour Local Election Headquarters: 2026 Nebraska Primary Election ResultsSports: Local Iowa high school track 3A State Qualifying Meet highlights and resultsWeather: Get the latest weather forecast hereNext, when you’re rolling down the highway, follow the speed limit.“This is probably the most effective thing you can do, and it also has the benefit of making you a safer driver,” said Jarmusz. “Be very mindful of the fact that there’s a direct connection between the gas pedal and the gas pump. So the more that you’re pressing the gas pedal, that’s just burning up fuel.”AdvertisementAdvertisementAnd when you’re driving in town, keep an eye on the car in front of you and brake accordingly.“When you’re driving around town and stop-and-go traffic, leave some extra space between you and the car in front of you and slow down a little bit to try and avoid the need for hard braking and then re-accelerate back up to speed,” said Jarmusz. It’s clear Siouxland residents are looking for ways to save. One driver who switched to two-wheel vehicles when the prices started to rise suggests the same to others.“The tip I have is to ride your bike more—pedal bikes, motorcycles, scooters, anything like that. They save on gas,” said Siouxlander Jason Monk.AdvertisementAdvertisementAnother suggestion is taking part in gas stations’ rewards programs. One man who drives for work between Omaha and Sioux City says he often scavenges the internet for deals.“I’ve got a couple of apps—the Casey’s app and a couple of coupon codes that I use for $0.05 off a gallon, stuff like that,” said Monk.Officials have plenty of tips on how to save money and gas, but here are just a few of them:Minimize your use of air conditioning.Avoid prolonged idling.
