Mercedes 'Little G' Won't Be Made in Germany: ReportMercedes-BenzMercedes-Benz's upcoming "Little G" compact SUV has a number of fans patiently counting down the days until the model's arrival in 2027. Mercedes has been relatively tight-lipped about the upcoming baby off-roader, but a new report from Automotive News Europe helps give some shape to the truck's production plans. More specifically, it appears that like its bigger sibling, the lower-case g-wagen won't be built in Germany. For those who aren't in the know, the full-size Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen models have never been built in the brand's home country. Since 1979, every single Gelandewagen for civilians and militaries alike has been constructed by hand at the Magna Steyr automobile plant in Graz, Austria. Unfortunately for those waiting with baited breath for the smaller Gelandewagen, the Little G apparently isn't destined for Magna Steyr, either.AN reports that the automaker's Kecskemet facility in Hungary has been earmarked for the SUV, following a €1 billion ($1.14 billion) expansion project. In fact, Kecskemet is slated to become the brand's largest plant in Europe, with an annual production capacity between 300,000 and 400,000 vehicles. That sort of capability would give the plant around 30 percent of the brand's total European production; it is currently is responsible for closer to 15 percent of all of Mercedes's Euro products.picture alliance - Getty ImagesMercedes-Benz had previously only confirmed the C-Class and all of its derivatives for the Hungarian production facility, but rising costs associated with western European production are reportedly shifting business plans. That said, earlier reports suggested that the Little G could adopt the brand's 1.5-liter hybrid powertrain destined for the CLA-Class and GLB-Class, which would track with the move to Hungary. A fully electric version of the SUV is also slated to join the lineup.AdvertisementAdvertisementEither way, the news is not ideal for those working in the brand's German plants. Not only is that one fewer model to build at home, but it's one that happens to be among the coolest vehicles in the upcoming portfolio. You Might Also LikeIf You Can Only Own One Car, Make It One of TheseThese Are the Most Popular Cars by State
