Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung Revives AMG’s Wild SideAutoblogKarl FurlongFri, September 11, 2026 at 9:57 AM UTCAdd us on GoogleAutoblog and Yahoo may earn commission from links in this article.Since the departure of the Mercedes-AMG C63 Coupe, the German automaker hasn't had a V8-powered replacement to take on the top BMW M4 models. But this is much more than an M4 rival. The new AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung is a highly exclusive version of the CLE with a monster 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, rear-wheel drive, and considerably less weight. A member of the company's Mythos Series, the CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung will be produced in extremely limited numbers and every engineering decision has been aimed at maximizing driving dynamics. While it's not a true replacement for the older C63, it has all the makings of a collector's item.A Huge Step Up From The CLE 53Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 SpezialanfertigungView the 5 images of this gallery on the original articleAdvertisementAdvertisementUp until now, the top CLE model has been the 53, which produces 443 horsepower from its 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine. As good as the 53 is, it always felt like AMG left room for something more hardcore higher up in the range, and the 646 Spezialanfertigung (which translates to "custom-made") does not disappoint.Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung SpecsEngine4.0L twin-turbo V8Horsepower637 hpTorque627 lb-ftTransmission9-speed automaticDrive typeRWD0-62 mph (0-100 km/h)3.9 seconds0-124 mph (0-200 km/h)11.4 secondsThe new CLE's '646' designation comes from its 646-PS output, which translates to 637 hp—making it a lot more potent than the BMW M4 CSL. The M177 EVO V8 has been thoroughly enhanced and has a flat-plane crankshaft that improves throttle response. The 0-60 time should be around 3.7 seconds, around half a second quicker than the CLE 53. But the 646 directs all its power to the rear wheels, whereas the CLE 53 features a grippy all-wheel-drive system. The 646 was not conceived as the ultimate sprinter, though. This is a hot coupe designed to maximize driving thrills, from its new coilover suspension to the specialized aerodynamics and 375-lb weight reduction. The chassis can be tailored by way of four-way adjustable damper technology with independently configurable low speed and high speed rebound and compression settings. The 646 also comes with an AMG high-performance composite braking system, an integrated roll bar to improve rigidity, and a traction control system that can be adjusted across nine stages.AdvertisementAdvertisement"For me, the Mercedes‑AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung represents the very essence of AMG," said Dr. Stefan Weckbach, Chairman of the Management Board of Mercedes-AMG GmbH. "This vehicle came to life because highly rational engineers dreamed of a highly irrational car. We turned that dream into reality in the form of maximum driving dynamics and an unparalleled driving experience."Related: 2024 Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 First Drive Review: Big-powered coupe tackles volcanoDramatic Wide-Body Design and Two-Seat CabinMercedes-AMG CLE 646 SpezialanfertigungMercedes-AMGIt may have 'CLE' in its name, but the 646 is a far more aggressive car than the CLE 53, sparking memories of wild Black Series AMGs from the 2000s and 2010s. Its wide-body design features a reinforced bodyshell that's 2.4 inches wider, front and rear. Thanks to the wider track, stability and cornering are enhanced. The car rides on AMG Performance forged wheels measuring 20 inches, and the tires have been designed specifically for this car.Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 SpezialanfertigungMercedes-AMGView the 4 images of this gallery on the original articleAdvertisementAdvertisementAerodynamics have informed the design, from the front diffuser (manually adjusted via three fasteners) to the manually-adjustable rear wing, which is mounted on two trapezoidal supports. Carbon fiber is used liberally, including for the wider front fenders, new front fascia, side sill panels, and the hood with a central cold air intake. The finishing touch is an exclusive paint finish, with a Mojave Silver Magno front section and Obsidian Black Magno for the bodywork from the B-pillar rearwards.Much has changed inside, too. The rear seats and acoustic insulation materials have been removed. Together with a simplified sound system and reduced infotainment functions, this contributes to 375 lbs of saved weight. The front seats are ultra-lightweight racing buckets. Six-point harnesses are available, and there are lightweight carbon fiber door panels.Related: Mercedes-AMG Quashes Hopes for a C63 V8 Revival, for NowAvailability, Pricing, and Why It MattersMercedes-AMG CLE 646 SpezialanfertigungMercedes-AMGView the 5 images of this gallery on the original articleAdvertisementAdvertisementA mere 30 examples of the handcrafted AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung will be produced and all have already been sold out. No price was announced, but it could easily cost double that of the $77,400 CLE 53's price, given the extensive performance upgrades and exceptional exclusivity. This is the second Mythos Series model after the AMG PureSpeed, and AMG is clearly delivering on its promise for these models to be ultra-exclusive performance machines for the most loyal enthusiasts. While most of us may never get to experience a Mythos model, they have the same aura as the older Black Series models. These models also mark a shift to high-margin performance models in the realm of Ferrari and McLaren, with the hope that some of their advanced technologies will trickle down to higher-volume AMGs.Related: Mercedes-AMG Calls Black Series an "Obligation" as Hardcore Models ContinueThis story was originally published by Autoblog on Sep 11, 2026, where it first appeared in the News section.
