These days, buying a cheap new car is quickly becoming a thing of the past. A decade ago, if you were shopping for a brand-new car with a sticker price under $20k, you were spoiled for choice. Models like the Ford Focus, Chevrolet Cruze, and Hyundai Accent made up just a portion of all available namesakes at a bargain-basement price. Back then, buying new instead of used seemed to make a bit more sense than it does now with models such as those on offer. However, in today's post-COVID world, the cheap, new car market is a shadow of its former self. Two years ago, just two models remained in that price bracket, those being the Nissan Versa and the Mitsubishi Mirage. The latter was just a tinge more expensive than the Nissan, but it still offered a base price under $17k. However, the Mirage was axed following the 2024 model year. The thing is, though, there are still a small number of brand-new, never-titled Mirages on dealer lots, but that number is quickly dwindling. Fewer Than 100 Remain Mitsubishi In August 2024, Mitsubishi formally announced that the Mirage, the marque's cheapest model for the North American market, would be discontinued following the 2024 model year. Production was slated to end right before the start of 2025. These final models were then shipped off to Mitsubishi dealers, where folks who wanted a cheap-and-cheerful, small car could go and get one of the last sub-$20k new cars in the United States. However, the Mirage wasn't exactly a popular model. In 2022, Mitsubishi managed to sell just about 15,814, with that number dropping to roughly 13,220 in 2023. For comparison, the Nissan Versa, the Mirage's closest competitor, managed to sell approximately 24,807 times in 2023. Bearing the Mirage's rather poor sales figures, it's no surprise to learn that a few still remain as brand-new models on Mitsubishi dealer lots today.Mitsubishi According to an article written by CarEdgethat was last updated on March 6 of this year, roughly 67 brand-new 2024 Mitsubishi Mirages are still sitting at dealerships across the country. Because they haven't been titled, these 67 forgotten models are still considered new cars, and will be able to take advantage of Mitsubishi's new car warranty structure, despite being technically two years old. If you're someone who's lamented the discontinuation of the cheap Mitsubishi, but couldn't get your hands on one during its final model year, you'd better act fast and buy one of those 67 before it's too late. What The 2024 Mitsubishi Mirage Has To Offer MitsubishiIn total, the '24 Mirage can be had with one of four total trim levels, ranging from the base ES hatch to the mid-range LE. Moving up from there sits the Special Edition, also known as the "Black Edition". Topping off the model range is the SE grade. However, Mitsubishi also offered the Mirage G4, a sedan version of the Mirage. Pricing began at $16,695 for an ES-spec hatchback, and $17,795 for an ES-spec sedan.Mitsubishi Being one of the cheapest cars on sale in 2024, you're right in assuming the Mirage doesn't have a luxury-packed interior or a wild and aerodynamic exterior. Mitsubishi seems to have kept the prices to a minimum by stripping the Mirage clean and then offering tons of optional packages, including the Exterior Package, Park Assist Sensors Package, and Chrome Package. We'll list out the rest of the available packages below: LED Illumination Package Cargo Package Interior Package All Weather Package Popular Value Package Protection Value Package Convenience Value Package ES ($16,695–$17,795) Getting down with the cheapness is easy for the Mirage and Mirage G4 ES. Kicking things off when it comes to features is its manual transmission, which stood as the standard gearbox. A CVT stood as the optional upgrade. As for its interior, its seats were trimmed in basic cloth, and could be adjusted six ways by the driver, and four by the front-seat passenger. An armrest was not included, so get used to driving 10-and-2.Mitsubishi A seven-inch infotainment screen takes center stage, which boasts both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Its sound system consists of four speakers, with no option to upgrade it. Cruise control and automatic climate control are both standard fare, although the HVAC system is controlled by good ol' knobs and buttons. A full complement of driver assistance features are present, including forward collision mitigation and hill-start assist, a useful piece of tech for manual transmission-equipped Mirages.Mitsubishi On its exterior, buyers enjoyed things like halogen headlights paired with LED tail lights. In addition, both bumpers are body-colored, and you even get a little chrome grille. A small roof spoiler is present on hatchback models, whereas the G4 sedans made do with a smooth trunk lid. 14-inch steel wheels with plastic caps are present wrapped in 165/65R14 all-season tires, along with a pair of manually-folding wing mirrors, as well. LE ($17,445–$18,495) Along with all options mentioned above, LE-spec'd Mirages and Mirage G4s receive the CVT as standard, with no option to equip a manual transmission. Instead of the 14-inch steelies found on the ES trim, the LE received an upgraded set of 14-inch alloy wheels. Apart from those two upgrades, the ES and LE grades are virtually identical. Black Edition ($18,045–$19,195) MitsubishiThe Black Edition Mirage and Mirage G4 don't bring anything new feature-wise to the table. Its only changes are found in its appearance. Instead of a chrome grille, it receives a black/carbon setup with red accents. In addition, a black front lip, black side moldings, and a black rear splitter are standard, as well. Finishing off the new frock is a "Black Edition" badge on the trunk/rear hatch. SE ($18,895–$19,595) Things take a turn for the luxurious with the Mirage and Mirage G4's top-spec "SE" trim. Kicking things off is a pair of LED headlights, replacing the old-school halogen ones. A pair of fog lights are seen, too, along with red grille accents. Its wing mirrors also gain LED turn-signal indicators. Its alloy wheels grow in diameter, as well, up to 15 inches.Mitsubishi Inside, its instrument cluster boasts a chrome surround, along with a standard armrest for front-seat passengers. The seats themselves gain some synthetic leather trimming, along with heating for the front row. A leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear knob are now standard, along with carbon fiber-effect panels for its window switches. Push-button start and lane departure warning are also standard fare. Get One While You Still Can MitsubishiWith only a reported 67 left across the entire United States, it might be hard to actually locate a remaining, brand-new 2024 Mitsubishi Mirage or Mirage G4. However, if you're able to, you'd be afforded the opportunity to own one of the final sub-$20k cars in existence. Not to mention, the Mirage does have a decent bit of kit on offer, especially when you consider the litany of packages available. No, it will never be as nice or sporty as something like a 2026 Acura Integra Type-S, but you get what you pay for, and you're not going to pay much.
