Mercedes-Benz AG – Communications & MarketingThis is what happens when engineers are left to do what they love most: build the impossible. When you spend your life building cars that win on F1 tracks around the world, you might learn something, right? That’s where the designers and engineers at Mercedes-AMG, the performance arm of Mercedes-Benz, find themselves these days: soaking up the technology and engineering that not only lead on the track but lead the industry, and then crafting it to do the impossible. AdvertisementAdvertisementThe result, or at least the most recent result, is the just-announced Mercedes-AMG GT 4-door Coupe that will deliver a V8 experience from an all-electric powertrain. This story is 100% human-researched and written based on actual first-person knowledge, extensive experience and expertise on the subject of cars and trucks. Additionally, I was a guest of Mercedes-Benz for this reveal but all opinions are my own.All Electric … V8? The Mercedes-AMG GT is the Future of EVsThe rear end of the 2027 Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe shows its F1-inspired hot ‘tailpipe’ tail lights and lower diffuser, all lending to the feel of its V8 Mode – Credit: Mercedes-AMGYes, all electric. But it’s designed to be better than just a hypercar with mind-melting acceleration and insane power. In what will be the most powerful Mercedes-AMG ever, the company sought to build an experience that pairs the prowess of electric power with the experience of a true gas-powered supercar and all that it entails: A comfortable, silent drive when you want it and a butt-vibrating, heart-pounding experience when you want it. All with a practical range of 381 miles. To do this, the company embarked on its biggest development project ever, bringing its EV engineers together with its V8 engine and exhaust engineers, as well as sound engineers, together to dive deeply into the tech, the data and the systems to find a way. They listened to their favorite V8 engines and settled on recreating the sound and feel of the C190’s twin turbo V8. AdvertisementAdvertisementTo create the emotion of a powerful V8, it needed to touch all the senses: not just the physical feel of speed, but the sound of a roaring engine, the tactile feel of paddle shifters under your fingers and vibration in the seats, the visual cues of lighting that adds motion to the interior of the car, and a chassis that is tuned to harness all that power with precision. AMG promises this 1,153 HP super car will be the most convincing performance EV ever. Performance Isn’t Just About Speed: Faster Charging and DrivingThe 2027 Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe – Credit: Mercedes-AMGThe AMG GT 4-door Coupe is powered by a tri-motor powertrain that is lighter and of course, more powerful, and paired it with a more efficient battery system that will charge to 80% in just 11 minutes. That’s thanks to an internal cooling system that is ideally intended for quick charging between laps on the track but will also deliver faster charges to all Mercedes-Benz EVs once the technology trickles down to future models. The battery system is also slimmer and smaller, allowing for a lower center of gravity to make this four-door coupe look and feel more like a sports car (though EV battery packs still need the full length of a sedan or SUV). This lower stance, said Michael Schiebe, head of production quality and supply chain at Mercedes-AMG, will allow the AMG GT 4-Door Coupe to “drive as if it’s on rails;” with more room in the footwells the driver can assume a race car posture in the seating position for full control of the car on a track or twisty road. A V8 Experience is the Heart of This Coupe—And Standard The performance dials are front and center in the 2027 Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe – Credit: Mercedes-AMGAll buyers of the AMG GT, either the 55 4-Door Coupe delivering 805 HP or the 63 4-Door Coupe delivering 1,153 horsepower, will get the V8 experience standard. Drivers will be able to customize their experience using a new set of dials on the center console to customize the performance of the motors, the agility of the chassis and the GT’s traction. It will instantly spark the engine sound to life, with sound fed into the cabin and heard outside the car; all that horsepower will be felt in vibrating seats, and when it’s put in gear, it’ll take on the cadence of a true V8, with building sounds, transmission shifts, and even a tachometer to show the power at hand. While AMG won’t add a ‘true’ shifter, there are paddle shifters to shift through the gears and really control the power. And then, there’s boost mode: pull both paddle shifters at once for a fun minute of an additional boost of up to 148 HP. All this is to create the ultimate drive: An EV that sounds and feels like a true AMG.A Rethought Interior With New Controls Enhances the Drive The driver’s view in the 2027 Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe – Credit: Mercedes-AMGThe design of the AMG GT 4-Door Coupe is intended to be the best of all worlds: A driver-focused sports car, a thrilling experience on the right roads and for passengers, a calming and elegant experience when performance is not the objective. There are screens across the dash but AMG has added back buttons and dials on the steering wheel and center console to add more control. The classic Mercedes-Benz turbine design, seen in the brand’s iconic air vents, take center stage on the console; they allow the driver to dial in the desired performance. There are also dual phone chargers and screens that span the dash for the driver, the center command screen and a passenger screen for added function. The screen holds the brand’s new MBOS operating system, notable for its quick and intuitive function, cloud-connected voice assistance and personalization.AdvertisementAdvertisementAnd then, there’s the space and comfort of the GT 4-Door Coupe, which by its nature, is a luxury car: luxurious materials, comfortable seats and comfort mode, which dials down all the V8 fury and allows driver and passengers to focus on music, conversation or the sights along the drive.
