Hyundai Ioniq 5 XRTWhile other vehicles have decreased in sales, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 has increased in sales compared to last year.Hyundai has sold 20,730 Ioniq 5s this year. This is up 9% compared to last year.That makes it the best-selling non-Tesla electric vehicle in the U.S. so far this year. For better or worse, Tesla has dominated the U.S. EV market. With well over 500,000 EVs sold last year in America, including over 350,000 Model Ys, Tesla is pretty much untouchable. But not every buyer is into what Tesla is offering, and the battle for second place is still very much on. So far this year, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 is America's new best-selling EV that isn't a Tesla. Since the start of the year, the Ioniq 5 has sold 20,730 units and is up a solid 9% year to date. Most of the other top-selling non-Teslas haven't fared nearly as well in this new, more difficult era for EVs. AdvertisementAdvertisementThe Ford Mustang Mach-E managed to rack up 11,632 sales in the first half, while Chevrolet sold 16,249 units of the Equinox EV. Both models have seen their sales fall by more than 40% year to date. Keep in mind that the Equinox EV was the best-selling non-Tesla EV of last year, while the Mach-E claimed the record the year before that. The Toyota bZ? Sales are on fire this year, and 17,553 units is respectable. But it's still behind the Hyundai. (To be sure, some automakers have not yet reported Q2 sales, so there's a small chance the leaderboard could change. But it doesn't seem likely.)There's a lot to like about the Ioniq 5, and I understand why people are falling in love with it. On the whole, the new Ioniq 5 is a nicer, easier car to live with while still being reasonably priced at a dealership. The latest version has a NACS charging port and can use Tesla's Supercharger network, plus it gained a rear wiper. It's also nice to drive, and a big price cut after the tax credit ended made it one of the greatest values on the new car market. The very base model of the Ioniq 5 can be had for as little as $35,000 before destination fees.Now the EV sales charts are still dominated by Tesla, and they probably will be for some time. But will new cars like the Rivian R2 and the Slate pose a real threat, dethroning the Ioniq 5 and maybe even a Tesla? Only time will tell.
