The Subaru BRZ has always been a bit of an oddball in the Japanese automaker's lineup, since, until recently, it was the only model without all-wheel drive in the U.S. Even with two generations under its belt, Subaru has resisted offering all-wheel drive even as an option. Now Subaru is finally giving into its all-wheel-drive tendencies with a special race car just for the All Japan Rally Championship, and it sounds like a blast.Subaru It's Almost Like A WRX Coupe It's clear at first glance Subaru has put a lot of work into this special BRZ, which is actually called the Boxer Rally spec.Z (note which letters are capitalized). It has a revised front bumper without the outboard intakes and a more pronounced lower spoiler. The front and rear fenders have far more clearance to allow more wheel travel. At the back is a large wing, which apparently is straight from the STI accessory catalog. The whole thing sits on a set of Work 18-inch wheels.Subaru Under the hood is the same 2.4-liter flat-four that comes in every other BRZ, but with one big change: it's turbocharged. And it does seem that Subaru added a turbocharger to the BRZ engine, rather than dropping in the WRX engine, based both on the company's wording as well as the fact that it has a front-mount intercooler, rather than a top-mount one. That's also why it lacks a signature Subaru hood scoop. We only have estimates for power, but it has plenty to be fun. It makes at least 276 horsepower and 377 pound-feet of torque.Subaru didn't give much detail into how it added all-wheel-drive to the BRZ, but we imagine there are a fair few custom parts based on the inclusion of a sequential six-speed manual transmission. Suspension details are also lacking, but they involve KYB shocks. Subaru also added four-piston brake calipers and slotted rotors from Endless at all four corners. Despite the added turbocharger equipment and front driveline, this rally BRZ weighs less than 2,866 pounds, which means it's basically as light or slightly lighter than the production rear-drive car.SubaruThe rally BRZ's first outing will be on May 8th during the third event in the All Japan Rally Championship. The event will take place in Asuka, Japan, a little ways outside Osaka and Nara. It will also be a tarmac rally, so the BRZ's dirt debut will have to wait for another day. We Think A Road-Going One Would Be Sweet SubaruThe BRZ and the GR 86 are fantastic sports cars. They're so good that at least a few of us like them even better than more powerful, more capable sports cars from the same companies. Still, we can't help but love the idea of imbuing even more traction and power into that amazing chassis. For Subaru in particular, both turbocharging and all-wheel-drive are core parts of the company, so it would seem fitting. It could even be a spiritual successor to the Impreza WRX STI coupes of the 1990s. Plus, with Toyota likely working on its own all-wheel-drive performance coupe, it would be an easy way for Subaru to keep up.The aftermarket is booming for the BRZ and GR 86, too, so clearly people are interested in having a hotter version. A factory one would offer that for those who want the power with a warranty. It could also provide an even better starting point for those who like to modify. Then again, if Subaru and Toyota let their rear-drive coupe stay as it is, with natural aspiration and just two driven wheels, that's fine. It's even a little admirable. It's a phenomenal car as is, whether you modify it or not. Having just one specification also makes every version of it just as appealing. You don't get the problem that the Mustang and Camaro had in which the V8 dominates the conversation, even when the four-cylinder versions have plenty to offer. At least, those are our thoughts. What do you all think?
