Subaru’s overall sales fell last month as buyer demand softened. Majority of models posted sizable year-over-year declines. The electric Solterra bucked the EV downturn with a notable gain. The Subaru Ascent is nearly a decade old and the model hasn’t changed much since a facelift was introduced for 2023. As a result, consumers have turned their backs on the aging three-row crossover. Despite this, the model managed to outsell the brand’s three EVs in April. Consumers snapped up 3,472 Ascents and that’s 1,419 more than the combined sales total of the Solterra, Trailseeker, and Uncharted. The Solterra sales defied all odds and climbed 18.9% despite the elimination of the federal tax credit. This was likely due to a recent facelift, which saw the model outfitted with an upgraded powertrain as well as a beefier battery pack that provides up to 288 miles (463 km) of range. As for the Trailseeker and Uncharted, they’re brand-new and just began arriving at dealerships last month. This means it’s too early to read into the numbers at this point. Despite that, their addition to the lineup helped Subaru of America achieve a new monthly sales record for EVs. Unfortunately, that’s where the good news ends as April sales fell 5.9% to 52,733 units. The popular Forester was down 7.7%, while the Impreza was off an alarming 43.6%. Customers also continue rejecting the redesigned Outback as sales were down 8.3% to 10,552 units. The only models beside the Solterra to post gains were the Crosstrek and WRX. The former saw a 4.9% boost to 15,667 units and this was likely aided by the hybrid variant. As for the WRX, it saw a 52.6% increase as 1,178 sedans found a new home. The jump can likely be attributed to sizable price cuts as the WRX Premium now starts at $33,995, which is a $3,755 savings compared to its predecessor.
