This VehiCROSS packs a 4.0-liter V8 paired with a five-speed manual. Upgrades include 15-inch wheels wrapped in massive 35-inch tires. Often overlooked today, the quirky SUV still has plenty of appeal. The Isuzu VehiCROSS lived a short life in the States, just three years on sale, but it remains one of the strangest and most compelling compact SUVs of the late 1990s and early 2000s. Isuzu built it to actually go off-road, with a hardware focus that modern crossovers wouldn’t recognize. It also happens to be a fantastic starting point for someone who can’t leave well enough alone. A particularly unhinged example crossed the block in Denver earlier this week, and it might be the wildest VehiCROSS we’ve come across. It ultimately sold for $12,000. Given everything packed underneath, that number looks like a good deal. Instead, the seller equipped it with Toyota’s legendary 1UZ-FE 4.0-liter naturally aspirated V8, originally built for the Lexus LS 400 and also used in the Toyota Crown and Lexus SC 400. This engine has also been upgraded with a new intake manifold, coil-on-plug conversion, and works alongside the five-speed manual transmission of a Hummer H3. Bring a Trailer The Bring a Trailer listing fills in the rest of the hardware, and it’s serious. The build runs an NR6 dual-range transfer case, air lockers, Isuzu 4.77:1 differentials, and Aisin manually locking front hubs. It rides on 35-inch General Grabber X3 tires wrapped around 15-inch aftermarket wheels. The factory KYB shocks stayed, though they’ve been retuned to take the edge off the ride. Clearly, this Isuzu means business, prioritizing off-road performance over everything else. Alongside the mechanical upgrades, it also includes a new hood vent to keep the V8 cool, a large roof basket, an LED light bar, and a custom front bumper with two recovery points. As for the interior, it’s mostly standard, but does include a Pioneer infotainment display and a digital instrument cluster. Total mileage at the time of the auction is estimated at around 225,000 miles (362,000 km). Bring a Trailer
