Porsche, a brand known for track-dominating two-door sports cars, took the SUV world by storm more than two decades ago when the Cayenne arrived with a unique take on the German brand's design and performance pedigree. About a decade after the Cayenne arrived, the Macan arrived as a smaller, more affordable version that didn't leave out the Porsche attitude. The Macan has been one of the cornerstones of the brand's profit margin, standing as the second-best-selling model behind the Cayenne. But this summer, Porsche plans to make some changes in the Macan lineup that, at face value, seem like self-sabotage. The Gas-Powered Macan Will End Production This Summer Without A Replacement Porsche It's not wholly uncommon for a vehicle to bow out before a replacement has been put in motion, though it is fairly rare for this to happen to a brand's volume-seller, of which the gas-powered Macan is. For buyers looking to get into a Porsche SUV, they can choose either the Cayenne or the more affordable Macan. This has always put the Macan in a position to satisfy a large part of the modern market: cross-shopping SUV buyers looking for optimal value propositions. And with EV sentiment waning, the gas-powered version stands as the safety net that will pull in sales during times of uncertainty. The gas-powered Macan is in higher demand than its EV counterpart, and with that in mind, it's fair to assume that, with the end coming soon, a new model will be right around the corner to pick up where its predecessor left off. Nope. According to Porsche, a combustion replacement won't be on the menu until 2028 at the earliest. This isn't great news, as the brand's Q1 2026 sales report shows a decline in sales across every nameplate except the 911. With lackluster deliveries across the board, one wonders why a volume seller like the gas-powered Macan is being sidelined while the less popular Macan Electric soldiers on. For reference, the Macan Electric sold 8,079 units in Q1 2026, while the ICE version moved 10,130 units in the same period. How The Original Plan's Backfire Led To A Frustrating ConundrumThe Macan Electric was originally slated to replace the gas-powered Macan. Though with the EV tax credit ending in 2025—resulting in a noticeable dip in EV sales—numerous manufacturers, including Porsche, are scaling back their electric plans in order to move units. Porsche was forced to reevaluate the Macan Electric's long-term success potential due to the industry turning tail on the EV takeover, which has put a two-year delay on a gas-powered Macan replacement. Thankfully, Porsche reports that it's already been approved, is in testing, and will ride on the Audi Q5's platform. Though, as mentioned, it's still a few years out. The ICE Macan Will Fight Until There's Literally Nothing Left Porsche With Macan sales already down 18.8 percent in the US in Q1 2026, the phasing out of the gas-powered variant won't do Porsche any favors. And though production of gas-powered Macans will be tapered off as we get closer to the deadline, for now, there are still new Macans on lots, as well as on the assembly line. This gives Porsche a few months before buyers lose the option to customize and tailor the gas-powered Macan, which is when we'll see the real drop-off in sales.Porsche Porsche CFO, Jochen Breckner, stated that the brand will provide as many new Macans to the US as they can, but limited parts suppliers will put a cap on how many exactly Porsche will be able to supply. We could see deliveries of new gas-powered Macans into 2027, which would leave a year, at least, until we get news of a successor. The situation could be a lot worse, though it will sting nonetheless in terms of Porsche's profit and momentum, which is already hurting.Sources: Porsche
