A woman wants to buy a 2016 Hyundai Accent from a man on Facebook Marketplace, so she brings it to an O’Reilly mechanic. The mechanic advises the woman against the sale, and the man suggests it’s because the mechanic doesn’t know what she’s talking about. TikTok creator Isaac (@itsisaac.r) was advertising his 2016 Hyundai Accent on Facebook Marketplace when a woman asked to see it in person. So, he met her outside an O’Reilly Auto Parts so she could have a mechanic take a look at it. He posted a video of the interaction on Friday. The video shows the O’Reilly mechanic inspecting the vehicle before saying, "No, I wouldn’t buy this. It’s got a transmission leak. It has a lower belt cover leak." The woman agrees with the mechanic and declines to purchase the Accent. "She ruined the deal," Isaac wrote in the caption. Viewers React To The O’Reilly Mechanic’s Inspection In the video's comments section, viewers suggested that the mechanic’s assessment might not have been the most accurate. "I work as a mechanic and never heard a thing [about] lower belt cover leak and discolored oil," said one person. "That’s completely normal for a vehicle." A second person said, "All that without lifting the car up. Man, that's some impressive diagnosing skills." "I wouldn’t buy it either. A belt cover leak is nothing to mess with," joked a third viewer. "It involves removing the flux capacitor and draining all the gigawatts, recalibrating the muffler bearing, then refilling the flux capacitor to precisely 1.21 gigawatts or else it won’t activate at 88 mph. It can get VERY expensive." Who Is In The Right Here? The O’Reilly technician might have been referencing a timing cover oil leak, which can be an extremely costly repair. Mechanics can generally detect a timing cover leak by looking for oil seepage around the area and low oil levels. According to AutoZone, oil can turn a few different colors for several reasons, and not all of them indicate something is wrong with the vehicle. Of course, we generally think of oil as looking the golden color it does when it comes out of the bottle. But it also gets dark over time, and in some cases, that discoloration can stem from mechanical issues with the engine. Other car owners have found O’Reilly technicians helpful in the past, so it’s possible that this mechanic simply made a verbal error or hasn’t been fully trained yet. Or maybe she was just having a rough day. Motor1 contacted Isaac via TikTok comment and direct message for comment. We also contacted O’Reilly via press email for comment.
