McLaren has a brand-new portfolio of production cars set to be revealed, at least in part, this summer to coincide with the start of deliveries for the W1 hypercar. And, in further good news for purists, it appears all will have an internal combustion engine. But it's likely that not all will be two-door, two-seat supercars. McLaren Has No Imminent EV Plans, But SUV Could Happen CarBuzz/ValnetMcLaren Group Holdings CEO Nick Collins confirmed to Autocar that, this summer, the brand will “start to unpack” its plans publicly for multiple new models scheduled to launch before 2030. Indeed, it's believed that these future production plans have already been shared with McLaren's official dealership network, which is currently gearing up for the start of deliveries for McLaren's follow-up to the P1, the 1,258-horsepower W1.Collins, however, would not be drawn on precise model details, suggesting that a preview of a brand-new car, rather than a production reveal, is on the table. Rumors abound though that McLaren will be the latest supercar maker to launch an SUV to rival the likes of Ferrari Purosangue, the Lamborghini Urus, Porsche’s Cayenne and Bentley’s Bentayga.F1rst MotorsIt’s also highly unlikely that an all-electric vehicle will be part of these plans, with Collins confirming to Autocar that a full McLaren EV will only be launched “when [their] customers want one.” The British entrepreneur went on to explain that “the market doesn’t want one yet,” a quote backed up by Mercedes slashing prices on its EQ range and Lamborghini’s U-turn on the electric Lanzador. Whether McLaren's upcoming models will be powered by its established twin-turbo V8 or feature a brand-new powerplant remains to be seen. The Merger That Made This Possible CarBuzz/ValnetThe report comes one year after McLaren teased “new product categories” as part of a team-up with British start-up, Forseven. This move came about via the Abu Dhabi government-backed CYVN Holdings, a majority shareholder in both McLaren Automotive and Forseven, in a bid to expand the Woking brand's model range from two-seater sports cars, à la contemporaries Ferrari, Porsche, and Lamborghini.Collins, then CEO of Forseven, confirmed that the British start-up would be disbanded, and that both entities would be merged into a combined company, McLaren Group Holdings, overseen by Collins. The move provides McLaren with the capital and resources required to move into segments it had previously been unable to finance. The lucrative, luxury sports SUV market is among the most prominent.McLarenForseven, founded in 2022 and built around a team of 700 automotive engineers and designers, essentially gave McLaren a huge leg-up into the market for luxury models it had been developing behind closed doors. Said vehicles will now be sold with the McLaren Speedmark on their respective noses.
