Leapmotor will launch an Ultra variant of the new B05/Lafa 5 in China in the second quarter of 2026, with company executive director and senior vice president Li Cao recently sharing photos of the electric vehicle (EV) undergoing testing on his personal Weibo page. Compared to the regular Lafa 5 variants, the Ultra gets a sportier-looking exterior featuring a prominent front splitter and lip finished in gloss black. There are also new side skirts and black wheels, while the rear sees a large roof wing and diffuser element. Given the launch of the Ultra variant is taking place months after the standard Lafa 5 goes on sale in China on November 28, 2025, the upcoming range-topper will likely benefit from an uprated powertrain and isn’t limited to just aesthetic changes. Reports from Chinese media suggest a dual-motor, all-wheel configuration, which should provide a lot more performance compared to the rear-wheel drive variants already announced. In China, the base powertrain for the Lafa 5 features a 56.2-kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery that is good for a CLTC-rated range of 515 km. This powers a rear electric motor rated at 179 PS (177 hp or 132 kW) and 175 Nm of torque, which is good for a 0-100 km/h time of 8.7 seconds and top speed of 160 km/h. The same battery is also paired with a more powerful electric motor with 218 PS (215 hp or 160 kW) and 240 Nm on mid-range variants. These options have a slightly higher top speed of 170 km/h and an improved century sprint time of 6.4 seconds, with no penalty to the range that stays at 515 km. With AC charging, the 56.2-kWh variants need approximately 4.2 hours to get from a 30-80% state of charge, while DC fast charging shortens the time down to around 18 minutes. Higher-end variants of the Lafa 5 retain the more powerful of the two electric motors and come with a 67.1-kWh LFP battery for up to 605 km of range. The top speed is still 170 km/h with this combination, although the 0-100 km/h time is slightly more at 6.5 seconds. With an increased capacity, the 67.1-kWh battery needs either 5.6 hours (AC) or 19 minutes (DC) to get from a 30-80% state of charge. Pricing for the Lafa 5 in China starts at 105,800 yuan (about RM62k) and peaks at 131,800 yuan (RM77k). The Ultra should retail for more given its styling upgrades and (potential) powertrain improvements.
