Lamborghini Has No Manual Transmission PlansLamborghiniIn a world where every supercar and hypercar (including the electric ones) can hit 60 mph in the two-second range and reach at least 200 mph, traditional metrics aren't cutting it anymore for the wealthy car enthusiast. To set their ultra-exclusive wares apart, automakers are focusing ever more effort on improving the overall driving experience as opposed to simply chasing raw numbers. One of the ways some of them are doing that is by bringing back the manual transmission. Not among those ranks, however, is Lamborghini.But... Everyone Else Is Doing ItDuring this year's Monterey Car Week, manual transmission supercars from McLaren, Gordon Murray Special Vehicles, and even Spyker were announced. Not long ago, Ferrari revealed a clever take on manually shifting and clutching an automatic, not all that different in practice to what Koenigsegg did a few years back. Pagani has an authentic manual in one of its cars and Aston Martin did one a couple years ago. Naturally, then, we asked Lamborghini chief marketing officer Federico Foschini if his company intended to bring back the stick shift, too.McLaren 6GT Concept manual transmission.Manufacturer"Not Under Evaluation""We are considering all the trends," Foschini told MotorTrend during an interview at The Quail. "For sure, it is something that would be interesting, but if you want to explore the potential of this technology, you have to have this kind of [automatic] gear-shifting, gearbox strategy. If you want to have a niche product for sure there is a space for this. But the main driver should be the one that we are doing because otherwise we are not able to exploit the potential of [the Revuelto SV], all the kind of engagement that you need to have for a car like this.AdvertisementAdvertisement"[A manual transmission] is an opportunity," he continued. "But at the moment is not under evaluation in the short term because we think that this is the way that we have to interpret our technology. And for sure, we need to take a decision, and sometimes we need to give priority, and for us the priority now is this one."Lamborghini Revuelto SVManufacturerNot Completely Off the TableFoschini no doubt chose his words carefully and deliberately left the possibility open in the long term. Whether the company would ever seriously consider it, though, is another matter. The Revuelto's unusual rear-facing engine and center-mounted transmission would make it difficult if not impossible to fit an existing manual transmission, and a custom box would be prohibitively expensive. The more traditional layout of the Lamborghini Temerario (presently the quickest gas-powered car we've ever tested) could work, but either its hybrid system or an existing manual transmission would have to be adapted to work together.Ferrari faced similar issues with the 12Cilindri Manuale and chose to follow Koenigsegg's example of creating an artificial manual shifter and clutch pedal which control an otherwise fully automatic gearbox. Lamborghini's most cost-effective approach would likely be to do the same, and the company will no doubt be watching to see how the Ferrari is received by supercar buyers.Photo credit: LamborghiniPhoto credit: LamborghiniPhoto credit: LamborghiniAdvertisementAdvertisementPhoto credit: LamborghiniPhoto credit: LamborghiniPhoto credit: LamborghiniPhoto credit: LamborghiniAdvertisementAdvertisementPhoto credit: LamborghiniPhoto credit: LamborghiniPhoto credit: LamborghiniPhoto credit: LamborghiniAdvertisementAdvertisementPhoto credit: LamborghiniPhoto credit: LamborghiniPhoto credit: LamborghiniPhoto credit: LamborghiniAdvertisementAdvertisementPhoto credit: LamborghiniPhoto credit: LamborghiniPhoto credit: LamborghiniPhoto credit: LamborghiniAdvertisementAdvertisementPhoto credit: LamborghiniPhoto credit: LamborghiniPhoto credit: LamborghiniPhoto credit: LamborghiniAdvertisementAdvertisementPhoto credit: LamborghiniPhoto credit: LamborghiniPhoto credit: LamborghiniPhoto credit: LamborghiniAdvertisementAdvertisementPhoto credit: LamborghiniPhoto credit: LamborghiniPhoto credit: LamborghiniPhoto credit: LamborghiniAdvertisementAdvertisementPhoto credit: ManufacturerPhoto credit: LamborghiniPhoto credit: LamborghiniPhoto credit: LamborghiniPhoto credit: LamborghiniPhoto credit: ManufacturerPhoto credit: LamborghiniPhoto credit: LamborghiniPhoto credit: Lamborghini
