Jay Leno's a lifelong car guywith a collection bigger than our wildest dreams. His only real bias is that the cars he owns have to be cool. As such, his garage is home to something from just about every carmaker from every era. As much time as he spends around automobiles, both new and old, foreign and domestic, what he has to say about them holds a lot of water. In his latest YouTube upload featuring a 1974 Triumph TR6, he reminds us that classic cars are just better. The 1974 Triumph TR6 Restoration Jay Leno's Garage, YouTubeIf you've only ever spent your time around modern cars, the 1974 Triumph TR6 just looks old. Everything is simple. There are no creature comforts. It has a radio, but as Jay Leno points out, it's pretty much useless. It's soft-top with dated speakers, and the engineers didn't know anything about acoustics, nor did they care. All they were really concerned with was building a car that was all about driving, and that's exactly what it is. Maybe a dated concept, but that's what makes classic cars like this one so special. Leno got his hands on this Triumph TR6 in a kind of funny way. As he lays out in the video, the previous owner outright gave it to him when he declined to buy it. The original intent was to give it a quick refresh. However, as with any classic car, the first repair was a tug at a loose thread that unraveled the whole thing. Before they knew it, they ended up performing a full-on restoration. Not an over-the-top job, though, just the right one for a respectable driver. If you ask us, that's the best kind. The video title declares the car as the end of an era, which Leno goes on to expound upon. Here in the States, we think of the onset of the emissions era as being particularly harmful to the muscle cars of the '70s. Smog and safety equipment strangled the cars until their big V8 engines were low-powered husks of their former selves. That was true for all cars, though. Even foreign cars, like the Triumph in question. With a 106-horsepower 2.5-liter inline six-cylinder under its hood, the TR6 seems anything but imposing in terms of performance. However, it's a very light car with a curb weight of just around 2,500 pounds. It wasn't weighed down by modern tech and comfort features. Therefore, it didn't need a ton of power to be a blast to drive around in, which Leno, of course, goes on to demonstrate. Classic Cars Are Just Better Jay Leno's Garage, YouTubeFrom the restoration process to the driving experience, this clip is a great look at how simplistic classic performance cars are. They don't have fancy, electronic suspension systems, tremendous amounts of power, or fully-loaded interiors. There's really not a whole lot to them, but that's what makes them such profound machines. It's all about what it delivers to whoever's behind the wheel, which is really what car enthusiasts love most. While there's certainly a difference between how European, Japanese, German, and American carmakers packaged their classic cars, they built them all to deliver a raw, thrilling driving experience in a way that modern cars simply can't.
