The Ridge Motorsports Park in Shelton, Washington, is not natural RAV4 territory. NWAPA's annual Mudfest competition—now in its 32nd year, consisting of two days of pavement and off-road testing with 18 journalists evaluating 18 vehicles—tends to produce its most memorable moments when something purpose-built and aggressive dominates the off-road course, or when something insanely powerful stuns on the road circuit. The custom obstacles, steep climbs, deep mud, and axle-twisting terrain are designed to expose vehicles that are merely faking their adventure-ready bravado. A hybrid compact SUV in trail specification, competing against pickup trucks, Jeeps, and a field of vehicles specifically engineered for this kind of punishment, was not the obvious candidate for the headline result. And yet, when the votes were tallied, the 2026 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Woodland walked away with the Best Value NW Outdoor Activity Vehicle award, having genuinely earned it over both days of testing against a field of impressively capable vehicles. Having spent two days with both vehicles, I think it was the right result, even if the CX-5 gave me more to smile about behind the wheel. This year's field included the 2027 Kia Telluride X-Pro SX-Prestige, 2026 Hyundai Palisade XRT Pro, 2026 Honda Pilot Elite, 2026 Mitsubishi Outlander Trail Edition, 2026 Subaru Outback Wilderness, 2026 Mazda CX-5 Premium Plus, and a host of other crossovers, EVs, SUVs, and pickups specifically chosen for their outdoor activity credentials. Steering was weighted up predictably through corners, body roll was well controlled for a vehicle of this type, and the hybrid powertrain—producing a combined 219 horsepower from its 2.5-litre four-cylinder and dual electric motors—delivered its power with a smoothness that translated well to the demands of the circuit. There is an immediacy to hybrid torque delivery that rewards committed throttle application on a tight course, and the RAV4 used it effectively.I want to be honest, though: the Woodland is not exactly a car that excites, even if it handles better than most will expect. It is a car that impresses, offering a different, slightly more peaceful experience. The CX-5 Premium Plus was noticeably more engaging to drive on Day One; its steering was more communicative, its overall dynamic character was more willing to involve the driver in what was happening, and it rotated around corners far more easily. If your primary measure of a compact SUV is how much it rewards you for paying attention behind the wheel, the CX-5 makes the stronger case on pavement. The RAV4, however, makes the stronger case for everything else.2026 Toyota RAV4 Woodland(C) 2026 Doug Berger | DBPicsOff The Road: Day TwoThe Woodland's hybrid system proved a valuable asset on the off-road course. The electric motors' instant torque delivery—available from a standstill, without the hesitation of a conventional powertrain as it builds up through its rev range—gave the RAV4 an immediate traction advantage on the more technical sections. On steep climbs, where measured, progressive power delivery is the difference between clearing the obstacle without drama and spinning a few wheels; the Woodland's system managed output with a precision that would have been difficult to replicate with a conventional engine. The multi-terrain select system and the Woodland-specific 17-inch all-terrain tyres provided the mechanical foundation the hybrid system needed to make its power as effective as possible, and the combination produced a vehicle that easily cleared the Mudfest course— steep climbs, deep mud puddles, axle twisters, technical descents—with a capability and composure that placed it well above its segment average. For a vehicle at this price point, competing against hardware costing considerably more, it was an impressive performance.AdvertisementAdvertisementThis section, however, requires acknowledging the Subaru Outback Wilderness. On the off-road course, the Outback was the more capable machine, with greater ground clearance, greater suspension articulation, and greater confidence over the most demanding obstacles. The RAV4 was genuinely capable off-road, but the Outback was genuinely exceptional. That said, the RAV4 did a far better job of balancing its on-road dynamics and its design both inside and out, with a remarkably impressive off-road demeanour.2026 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Woodland(C) 2026 Doug Berger | DBPicsFinal VerdictThe 2026 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Woodland is an easy recommendation. It doesn't ask you to make peace with significant compromises, nor does it require you to accept weaknesses as acceptable trade-offs for its strengths. It is a genuinely capable, genuinely efficient, genuinely well-priced compact outdoor activity SUV, and at Mudfest, in a field of purpose-built competitors, it earned its award on its own merit alone. If you prioritize driving engagement and on-road dynamics above all else, the CX-5 Premium Plus remains a compelling alternative worth your time before you sign anything. It is the most rewarding car to drive, and it performed creditably off-road as well. If you prioritize off-road capability and spaciousness above all else, consider the Subaru Outback Wilderness. But if you want the most complete and most balanced package—capable on trails, efficient on the commute, priced fairly for what it delivers—the RAV4 Hybrid Woodland is, without much qualification, the one to buy.2026 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Woodland.
