Honda recalls 60,000 Prologue and Acura ZDX EVs over backup cameras (Kevin Carter / Getty Images)Honda is recalling 59,887 electric SUVs — including 44,199 Honda Prologue and 14,688 Acura ZDX models — after a defect in the rearview camera system was found to produce blurry, distorted, or blank images. At the root of the problem is a manufacturing flaw in which the camera housing was not properly secured, Honda said, leaving the adhesive vulnerable to gradual separation. When the bond gives way, water can work its way into the unit, attacking internal electrical components and ultimately causing the image to degrade or disappear entirely. Owners have already filed 2,411 warranty claims tied to the problem, though no injuries have been reported, according to Men's Journal.Federal regulations mandate that every new vehicle sold in the United States come equipped with a working rearview camera, and the risk of these units failing put Honda out of compliance with that standard. According to Electrek, Honda's own assessment puts the share of truly affected vehicles at roughly 5%, though the company moved forward with a broader recall out of caution.AdvertisementAdvertisementHonda said dealers will swap out the defective camera at no cost. Letters informing owners of the recall are scheduled to go out July 6, 2026. Owners can also call Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138; the recall numbers are DO5 and DO6. The NHTSA campaign number is 26V306, and additional information is available at NHTSA.gov or by calling 1-888-327-4236.Both the Prologue and ZDX are built on General Motors' Ultium platform. The two automakers have been jointly examining the problem since May 2024. Because some GM vehicles share the same camera components, that automaker could separately announce its own recall action. Honda said the issue has been corrected in the 2026 Prologue, according to Electrek. The recall adds to a difficult stretch for Honda's electric vehicle ambitions. When the Prologue launched in March 2024 it quickly emerged as one of the market's standout electric vehicles, climbing to third in national EV sales rankings by late that year — a position that has since given way to a sales slide of more than 55% through the early months of 2026. Honda has since pulled the Acura ZDX from sale, leaving the Prologue as the only EV the company currently sells in the U.S.Honda's broader EV retrenchment has been significant. The company posted an operating loss of ¥414.3 billion for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2026 — its worst financial result since listing on the stock market in 1957 — after writing down more than ¥1.45 trillion in charges tied to its EV restructuring. Honda has also suspended construction of EV and battery plants in Canada on an open-ended basis, scrapped several electric models from its development pipeline, and abandoned earlier targets for EV sales share and an exit from combustion engines.
