The compact crossover segment remains a hot one in the USA, with more people buying small SUVs (alongside pickup trucks) than any other segment. It stands to reason that someone shopping for a small crossover in 2025 will want to look at what's best. In the hybrid crossover market, there are two popular models that dominate the sales charts - and they're very similar when it comes to size, space, and price. In the comparison of the Honda CR-V Hybrid vs. Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, which one is best?
There's a lot to consider when weighing up a good buy, and shopping in this segment implies you're looking for a value buy - something that's efficient, not too pricey, easy to look after, and something that won't let you down in the long run. Both of these brands are known for reliability, so what other metrics are there to consider when cross-shopping the CR-V Hybrid vs. RAV4 Hybrid? Let's unpack.
This is an on-paper comparison between the 2025 Honda CR-V Hybrid and the rivaling 2025 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid; this comparison is for the regular hybrids and excludes plug-in hybrid models. Contenders For The Title: Honda CR-V Hybrid Vs. Toyota RAV4 Hybrid

There's a lot of competition in the compact SUV segment, and while neither the CR-V nor the RAV4 are the smallest offerings in their respective stables, they are only one step up from that. Both are aimed at being entry-level cars for the growing family, and are focused on efficient and unfussed commuting. You can get either crossover in hybrid and non-hybrid format, with the RAV4 also being available as a plug-in hybrid and the CR-V as a fuel-cell-powered third option. Here we cover the regular hybrids only as a comparison of which offers the best value for money in the compact crossover market.
Design and Features

Neither of the two crossovers being compared here are particularly extraverted in the looks department, and both are somewhat generic in appearance. They feature overt grilles with the badging prominently displayed. Although the RAV4 Hybrid is available in seven trims - including one off-road-focused trim - the CR-V Hybrid can only be had in one of three versions.
The Honda CR-V: One Of Three

At the entry-point of the range, the Sport Hybrid model comes with 18-inch gloss black alloy wheels, roof rails, and a slightly sporty styling. You also get full LED headlights and dual-exhaust finishers. In the upper trims, you also get a power tailgate with hands-free access, and bigger wheels. Exterior paint colors are limited to a range of eight hues, four of which require an extra outlay of $455. Some suggest the CR-V's understated looks feel a little generic; if that's your take, the RAV4 will likely appeal a little more.
A Toyota RAV4 For Everyone

There's much more choice in terms of looks and features in the RAV4 lineup, with wheel sizes ranging from 17-inch steel wheels to alloys in 18- or 19-inch sizes. A two-tone exterior is available on some trims, and upper models get a standard moonroof. Similarly, top-end trims get LED accent lights and LED projector lamps up front. The Woodland Edition stands out with bronze-colored six-spoke wheels, integrated ED fog lights, unique raised roof rails, and special decals. There's a small - and mostly demure - selection of colors available across the lineup.
Performance and Efficiency

2025 Toyota RAV4 and Hybrid Exterior (11)
In this comparison of hybrid SUVs, we'll focus only on the regular hybrid electric models in the lineup. The two crossovers are closely specified, with the RAV4 Hybrid being 15 hp up on the CR-V Hybid. Despite being more potent, the RAV4 doesn't necessarily beat the CR-V for 0-60 times, although this is based largely on independent tests and not manufacturer claims. The RAV4 can tow a lot more - almost double - which is something you'll have to keep in mind if you're hoping to use your new crossover for any hauling duties.
As far as efficiency goes, the two SUVs are closely matched. One thing to keep in mind is that ou can get the CR-V Hybrid in FWD guise, which is the key to more economy - you'll be able to go further with the FWD models, but that doesn't mean that AWD models aren't economical. The RAV4, by contrast, is AWD only, and achieves equally impressed gas mileage - it fares even better than the CR-V on the highway, with 38 mpg to the CR-V's 36 mpg. If you opt for the special Woodland Edition trim, your gas mileage will drop significantly.
Driving Impressions: A Comparison Of Two Japanese Hybrids
While these cars are designed to thrill, it's still important that the drive be pleasant. We spent some time with the Honda CR-V hybrid just after the all-new model was revealed in 2023, and found it to be a decent experience.
"That doesn't mean the CR-V is perfect on the highway, though. While the immediate torque available makes the new hybrid quick off the line, there's not a lot of power to spare when accelerating from 50 mph to overtake... With that said, it's freeways and cities where the hybrid CR-V will live most of its life. The suspension and the hybrid's eagerness off the line make it a car that can zip around if needed, but it's mostly just comfortable and precise."

Like the CR-V, the RAV4 drives easily and feels competent, with acceptable amounts of lean if you take corners at speed. It's small enough to be nimble around the city, and will happily cruise on the open road while maintaining efficiency. Both of these crossovers make for comfortable family drivers, but there's a lot to be said for how popular the RAV4 has become in recent years, selling over 475,000 units in 2024. When comparing sales figures for the Honda CR-V Hybrid vs. RAV4 Hybrid, the former sold just over 400,000 units in America.
Interior Space and Tech

2025 Toyota RAV4 Interior (5)
"Getting into the new CR-V [hybrid], you can be forgiven for thinking it might be a Civic Si... the seats are comfortable and have red piping for a sport look, the honeycomb grilling across the dash is well-executed, and the steering wheel is just right. More importantly, the buttons do the things buttons should do, and the knobs do the things knobs should do. It's a masterclass in putting all the controls in the right place so anyone can get in and drive it without complaining."

While Honda has kept things young and sporty in its contender, Toyota has put lots of effort into making the RAV4 a comfortable and ergonomic space. The model has been lauded for its smart fit and finish, and upper-tier models come with options that make it feel quite upscale, including heating and ventilated seats. It is one benefit of the more expansive lineup from Toyota, whereas the CR-V is only available in three tiers. In terms of content, here's a visual breakdown of Toyota RAV4 Hybrid vs. Honda CR-V Hybrid features.
In this price range, the expectations for entry-level models aren't high, and in both cases, the bare necessities are present in models on the first rung. Moving up through the trims seems these cars equipped with more safety features such as blind spot monitoring, low-speed automatic braking, cross-traffic montiroing, and more. The same applies to luxury features such as heated seats - although the RAV4 does offer ventilation on top-tier models which Honda doesn't have on the menu.

It's worth noting, however, that while entry-level pricing is comparable, the most expensive CR-V you can buy, the Sport Touring Hybrid, costs $41,100 to start, while even the priciest Toyota - the Hybrid Limited - goes for less than that at $40,605, and offers a few more features than the CR-V does.
Cargo and Passenger Space
Although both are two-row crossovers that seat five people, there are some differences in terms of space. While compact crossovers such as these aren't expected to have oodles of room for passengers to stretch out, the CR-V does give just a little more room by every measurements:
The Outliers: RAV4 Plug-In Hybrid and CR-V e:FCEV
It's worth noting that for each of the contenders here, there are outliers worth mentioning, and in the case of the RAV4, the plug-in hybrid model is the most potent performer, too. The PHEV comes with a 302-hp powertrain and the benefit of a 42-mile all-electric range. It's by far the most efficient and powerful RAV4 on sale in 2025 - but it costs a pretty penny, too. The starting price for the RAV4 PHEV is $44,265, topping out at $48,135 for the XSE.

Honda
From Honda's side, the outlier is the hydrogen fuel cell version of the CR-V. The e:FCEV is a bit of a mouthful, but it's important technology that the brand is currently trailing in the state of California as an alternative to hybrids, EVs, and regular gas. Retailing for around $50,000, the e:FCEV is only available in grey or white, and promises a range of around 270 miles in total (and 29 miles on electricity alone). These aren't being produced en masse just yet, but we've spent some time behind the wheel, and look forward to seeing what Honda does next.
Pricing And Verdict

2023-2025 Honda CR-V Hybrid Exterior (10)
To draw conclusions, it's important to look at pricing - and in this case, pricing that's comparable across the range. The RAV4 lineup is cheaper - both at the bottom and top end - and it also offers more variety in terms of budget, features, and aesthetic.
In the performance comparison, the RAV4 comes out on top with more power, and a better tow rating. The Honda is, however, more efficient thanks to also being offered in front-wheel drive. Both of these cars score highly in terms of safety ratings, although it's the CR-V that holds an award from the IIHS for 2024 (Top Safety Pick). As a final point, the Toyota RAV4 remains recall free for the current model year, while the Honda CR-V has two recalls already logged with the NHTSA for the hybrid models specifically.
While we don't think you'd be making a mistake purchasing either of these cars, the Toyota is just a little ahead in most metrics of the CR-V vs.RAV4 Hybrid comparison - it's a tough competitor that is difficult to surpass. However, if you are looking for a small crossover with big space, the Honda CR-V does stand out in that one metric.
