Porsche is just weeks away from ending production on its best-selling vehicle, with no replacement due for years. For an automaker that's already struggling, never mind the borderline desperate state of its parent company Volkswagen Group, the prospect of winding down production on the number one product is certainly a daunting one.On its first-quarter 2026 earnings call, Porsche confirmed what we've known for some time. The gas-powered Macan SUV is coming to an end, and now, we have a specific timeframe for when that will happen. Even if Porsche wanted to keep building them, keeping the line running would be a monumental task. Gas Macan's Days Are Nearly Over PorschePorsche CFO Jochen Breckner talked about Macan production during the company's earnings call. "Production will be stopped in summer 2026," he said, though it won't go quietly into the night. If anything, there's a vibe from Porsche that it's backed into a corner with no choice but to end production. Apparently, keeping the line running would be a monumental task."During the last month that we have, we produce as much as we can."- Jochen Breckner, Porsche CFOHe didn't lay out how many Macans Porsche could build in a month, but he did say that it wasn't just production line space that was limiting the automaker. "Of course, our capacity is one factor there, but that’s not limited. Supplier parts are the other issue," he said. This is a rough patch for Porsche, which had gone all-in toward electrification. Those plans have left it without a 718 Boxster or Cayman to sell at all after the gas model ended and the EV has been delayed, and it will now only offer the electric Macan. Porsche is reportedly building a new gas model, but it won't be on the market before 2028.Being Macanless will put a dent in Porsche sales, but the impact might not be as dire as it sounds. Porsche sold 84,328 copies of the Macan last year, but the second-place Cayenne moved 80,886. In 2026, the Cayenne has pulled ahead of the Macan, beating it narrowly. Deliveries of the electric Cayenne will also start in the summer, but unlike the Macan, the gas Cayenne won't be cut. More Than Half Of Macan Sales Are EV Porsche Porsche won't lose all of those Macan sales, either, as it still offers the electric model. Last year, 54% of Macan sales were the EV, and that ratio continued into Q1 2026. Porsche could grow that when buyers no longer have the option of gas. But in the US, a key market for Porsche, the Macan electric isn't selling as well. It isn't a failure, though. Approximately one-third of US Macan sales are the EV, and demand is high for the gas model.Porsche's development of a new gas Macan is well underway. The automaker confirmed in 2025 that it was coming, and that it was set to arrive in 2028. The new model has been spotted testing already, though it was hiding in Audi sheet metal instead of a Porsche body. That wasn't fooling anyone, though. We're already confident that the next Porsche will look like a Porsche. It does strongly hint that the next Macan will once again use the same architecture as the Q5. In this case, that means the latest from the group, called Premium Platform Combustion. Audi launched this in 2024 with the A5 sedan, but the flexible architecture can be used on many different vehicles. We expect to see more of the new Macan sooner rather than later, as Porsche is certainly motivated to speed up development. We could have the official reveal as early as next year. Meanwhile, the final gas Macans could continue selling into the fall of this year, provided Porsche builds enough of them.
