The energy density of these packs will reach 500 Wh/kg, allowing BEVs to achieve a range comparable to diesel. Following BYD’s and CATL’s statements regarding solid-state battery trial production scheduled for 2027, Geely also provided an official statement about its SSB timeline. According to the statement, solid-state batteries are coming soon to vehicles across the Geely Holding ecosystem. It includes Geely, Zeekr, Lynk & Co, Volvo, Polestar, Lotus, Smart, Proton, Farizon, and other brands. The Geely’s solid-state battery will offer a few energy density variants. The top-tier pack will feature an energy density of 500 Wh/kg. It sounds from the text that Geely is talking about the whole battery, which means the cell’s energy density will be even higher. The currently produced “Golden Brick” liquid batteries from Geely boast a cell-level energy density of around 250 Wh/kg. Geely said that a car with the new 500 Wh/kg solid-state batteries will boast a range comparable to diesel-powered cars. So, they will be able to run over 1,000 km on a single battery charge. The company has begun real-world validation this year. The pilot deployment across portfolio brands is scheduled for 2027. It was also revealed that Dow Chemical acts as a partner in material development for Geely’s SSB, as it comes from Dow Chemical’s key account technical leader, Bo Tong. This supplier previously developed an adhesive for solid-state cells that remains stable in a wide temperature range from -40 °C to 120 °C. Previously, industry leaders poured cold water on the commercialization timelines of the solid-state batteries. According to CATL’s chairman Robin Zeng, its SSBs are at level four on the nine-point Technology Readiness Level (TRL) scale. It means that the world’s biggest EV battery maker still works with partial-scale SSB prototypes. However, CATL’s chief scientist, Wu Kai, shared that the firm is targeting TRL 7 (full-scale prototype in commercial conditions) or 8 (final commercial product certification). BYD also plans to begin trial production of SSBs. Most important news in your inbox. Recaps · scheduled All you need, in one email.
