1960 Ford Anglia Lands at Bring a TrailerBring a TrailerHere's a UK-built small Ford that's a near-match for one infused with movie magic. The Anglia first made an appearance in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.A very popular car in the UK in its day, these are relatively rare on this side of the pond, but simple to work on and keep running. If you're of a certain age, you probably expected that by 2026, flying cars would be commonplace. That hasn't quite worked out, but we've found one for you. Sort of.Bring a TrailerHovering magically into the frame over at Bring a Trailer (which, like Car and Driver, is part of Hearst Autos), it's a powder blue 1960 Ford Anglia, just like the one Ron Weasley used to break Harry Potter out of confinement and whisk him off to Hogwarts for another year of magical instruction and really quite inadequate supervision.Bring a TrailerOK, in terms of the flying part, this little Ford is very much bring-your-own-wand. However, at the risk of making a geometry joke, this really is a cute Anglia, and with a four-speed manual, would be fun to drive, too. Even if only on the ground.AdvertisementAdvertisementThe original Ford Anglia debuted one month after the UK entered World War II, as a small, practical car for lean times. Probably the most interesting thing about it was that two of them were used by a handful of Scottish students to steal the Stone of Scone from Westminster Abbey, where it was stored as a key part of the royal coronation rites.Bring a TrailerThe sixth-generation Anglia arrived at the tail end of the 1950s to a bit more optimistic mood, and its styling reflected some of the trends seen in American cars of the time. The reverse-slanted rear window, for instance, is a feature lifted from late-'50s Mercurys and Lincolns. Still, underneath, the Angia featured thrifty, four-cylinder power, and wind-tunnel testing helped keep fuel consumption reasonable on the highway. It was usefully sized and practical, and for all the jokes about British engineering, it even managed to set a number of endurance records. It was a smashing sales success and a common sight on UK roads, even as a police car.Bring a TrailerOn this side of the Atlantic, of course, few people thought about the Anglia until it appeared floating outside the second-floor window of the Dursleys' bungalow. The chief appeal of this example is its Potterish familiarity, and the car appeared in an episode of The Masked Singer that was themed around Harry Potter. As you can see from the pictures, it's a left-hand-drive export model rather than a UK-spec, RHD version as used in the movie. The suspension and brakes are freshly overhauled, and the engine's had a seeing-to as well, with a new carburetor, generator, and starter. The engine displaces 997cc and was rated at 41 horsepower. A few oil leaks and cosmetic issues are noted, but all told, this is a fun movie car replica to zip around in.
