A casual walk a decade ago between Ferrari Chairman John Elkann and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos set the Italian automaker on the path toward its first fully electric vehicle. That conversation ultimately yielded the Ferrari Luce, an electric supercar developed in partnership with former Apple design chief Jony Ive and his firm, LoveFrom. While the Luce represents a technological milestone for Maranello, its unconventional styling generated immediate public debate and split brand purists. Ferrari executives maintain the vehicle is a vital progression rather than a misstep, though industry observers question whether the design is an intentional gamble to break away from traditional combustion styling cues.FerrariHow a Billionaire's Quip Led to the LuceSpeaking at the Wave technology conference in Turin, Elkann recalled how the idea took root during a July 2016 meeting. According to a Reuters report, Bezos candidly told Elkann, "I don't know anything about cars, but I really know a lot about innovation. And I think that you need to really think hard about building an electric vehicle."Following that exchange, Ferrari partnered with Ive's LoveFrom team, spending a full year studying Ferrari's history before starting vehicle development. The joint teams in California and Maranello spent five years constructing the vehicle. Addressing public criticism, Elkann noted, "We weren't in any way intending to do a controversial Ferrari," emphasizing that early feedback reinforced internal conviction.A core element of Ive's approach was rejecting the automotive industry's push toward touchscreen-heavy dashboards in favor of tactile controls. "Touch, as the primary interface, shouldn't be in a car," Ive stated during the event panel. He explained that relying entirely on screens leaves drivers feeling "disconnected as a physical being from the object."Not a Warm Reception for the LuceFerrari deserves credit for refusing to build another screen-filled EV, choosing instead a tactile cockpit layout that prioritizes mechanical feel. Partnering with LoveFrom produced a thoughtful interior concept. However, Maranello struggled with the exterior proportions, prompting designers to release alternative designs to restore classic Ferrari lines. The broader enthusiast market is already responding to these visual shortcomings, with independent tuners drafting custom body kits to refine the factory exterior. A Ferrari supercar should command instant admiration without needing philosophical explanations from management. While the Luce successfully advances Maranello's electric capabilities, wrapping those innovations in a universally compelling design remains a work in progress.Ferrari
