Image Credit: AMMO NYC / YouTube.A 1982 Ferrari 308 GTSi has received its first proper wash and preservation detail after spending 18 years parked in a garage. The car belonged to Sam Milno, a lifelong car enthusiast and former body shop owner who had planned to repair the Ferrari after retirement.Sadly, Sam passed away only four months after retiring, before he could bring the car back to life. The 308 was then left to his son, Danny, who now hopes to finish what his father started.AMMO NYC's Larry Kosilla took on the preservation detail, carefully cleaning and polishing the Ferrari while respecting its originality. The goal was not to restore the car mechanically, but to uncover and protect the car Sam loved most.AdvertisementAdvertisementThe Ferrari had been parked with a blown head gasket, but its story went far beyond a mechanical failure. For Sam, this car represented a lifelong dream achieved by a blue-collar car guy who had always wanted a Ferrari.A Low-Mileage Ferrari With Deep Family MeaningImage Credit: AMMO NYC / YouTube.Danny explained that his father became fascinated with Ferrari after sitting in a Daytona as a teenager. Years later, the 308 became the car that proved he had reached that dream. The 1982 308 GTSi is one of Ferrari's most recognizable models, helped by its Pininfarina bodywork, removable roof panel, gated manual transmission, and fuel-injected V8. This example has only about 19,000 miles, making it a remarkably preserved car despite its long dormancy.Danny said the Ferrari was the only car his father truly wanted to keep after owning hundreds over the years. That made the detail less about shine and far more about preserving a piece of family history.Soft Paint Required A Careful TouchOnce the Ferrari arrived at AMMO NYC, Kosilla started with the moment Danny had been waiting for: a dramatic 50/50 polish test on the hood. The difference was immediate, revealing deep red single-stage paint beneath years of dust and haze.AdvertisementAdvertisementBecause early-1980s Ferrari paint is extremely soft, Kosilla approached the work with caution. Rather than cutting aggressively, he focused on removing swirls while preserving as much original paint as possible. The car was washed, foamed, dried, polished, and protected with wax rather than a modern coating. That choice helped retain a more natural finish, especially since Danny does not plan to immediately put heavy road miles on the car.Interior Cleaning Preserved Its AgeImage Credit: AMMO NYC / YouTube. The interior was dusty, dry, and tired, but largely intact. Kosilla removed items from the cabin, including old cassette tapes and New York bridge-and-tunnel tokens, small details that connected the car to its earlier life. The leather required gentle cleaning because older Ferrari hides do not have the same protective coatings found on modern automotive leather. Some discoloration remained, but that was treated as honest aging rather than damage to be erased.AdvertisementAdvertisementThe carpets were cleaned with shampoo, steam, and extraction, producing a dramatically fresher cabin. Leather conditioner was then applied to help soften material that had been dry for many years.A Detail, Not A Full RestorationImage Credit: AMMO NYC / YouTube.AMMO NYC also cleaned the wheels, dressed the trim, polished the exhaust tips, and touched up small paint chips around delicate areas such as the front fender vents. The engine cover was intentionally left closed because Danny wanted to be the first to open it and begin the mechanical work. That decision perfectly matched the tone of the project. This was not about taking control of Sam's Ferrari; it was about helping Danny continue his father's plan. When Danny saw the finished car, he said it looked far better than he expected. With the paint glowing again and the interior preserved, the Ferrari finally looked ready for the next chapter.A Father's Ferrari Gets Another ChanceThe 308 still needs mechanical work before it can return to the road, but its emotional restoration has already begun. Danny now plans to repair the engine with help from experienced Ferrari mechanics while doing as much as he can himself.AdvertisementAdvertisementOnce running, the car will be driven and shown in Sam's honor. After 18 years in a garage, this Ferrari is once again a family dream waiting to be fired up.If you want more stories like this, follow Guessing Headlights on Yahoo so you don't miss what's coming next.
