Image: MoviaAs early as 2016, the Copenhagen city administration decided to transition all 42 municipal bus routes to emissions-free vehicles. Since then, routes have been electrified one after another. Two years ago, the city committed to completing the full transition by 2025. At that time, around 90 per cent of the routes were already operating as battery-electric services, according to the city. With a slight delay, Copenhagen has now announced the complete electrification of its bus network. Last Sunday, the last two remaining routes, 19 and 5C, were switched to electric buses. The transport operator Movia deployed a total of 15 new electric buses for route 19. On route 5C, Denmark’s busiest bus route with around 17 million passengers annually, 37 new electric buses are now in service.“The fight for cleaner air has been a key issue for me since I entered politics, and that’s why I’m also really happy that we’ve now completely completed the transition to 100 per cent electric buses. It’s a huge milestone that Copenhagen is now a city where public transport is green, and neither pollutes nor emits CO2. It makes a big difference to the climate and the air we breathe every day,” said Sisse Marie Welling (SF), Lord Mayor of Copenhagen.“Congratulations to the Municipality of Copenhagen. Of course, with the new electric buses on lines 19 and 5C, but equally with all of the municipality’s bus lines now running on electricity. It is a historic milestone that has contributed to Movia’s total share of electric buses today being up to 72 per cent,” added Jeppe Gaard, Transport Director at Movia.Movia introduced its first electric buses as early as 2019. This followed a decision in 2016, in which the company and its owners – 45 municipalities and two regions in Zealand – set the goal of electrifying half of the bus fleet by 2030. This target was achieved in 2024, six years ahead of schedule.Diesel buses will not, however, be completely phased out immediately. In cases of operational disruptions or special services, diesel buses may still be used until the entire fleet is replaced.
