Image Credit: Carpoint. The Porsche 944 has always had the proportions to inspire a little experimentation. German specialist Carpoint has now taken that idea much further, turning the classic transaxle Porsche into a hand-built shooting brake that looks surprisingly convincing.Called the GT-K44, the conversion stretches the 944's roofline rearward and replaces its familiar hatchback profile with something closer to a compact grand-touring wagon. It's the sort of design that could almost be mistaken for an obscure Porsche prototype from the 1980s.There's historical inspiration behind it, too. Carpoint founder Andreas Freund previously spent several months driving a rare Porsche 924 estate conversion created by German coachbuilder Günter Artz, eventually teaming up with designer Michael Söhngen to reinterpret the idea using the 944.Carpoint is now offering the GT-K44 conversion to customers, with every example individually specified and constructed by hand. There's just one substantial hurdle: the standard conversion costs €100,000 before tax, and that doesn't include the Porsche 944 you need to supply.Turning A 944 Into A Shooting BrakeImage Credit: Carpoint. This isn't simply a different rear hatch bolted onto an otherwise standard 944. Carpoint extensively modifies and extends the roof while reworking the B-pillars, rear quarter sections, and surrounding body structure.Large new rear side windows are installed alongside a custom-made tailgate, while the rear bodywork and taillights are adapted around the new shape. Carpoint says several hundred hours of construction, bodywork, and painting go into each vehicle. The conversion also includes a complete exterior repaint, including the door jambs. Inside, Carpoint modifies the headliner and rear trim to accommodate the new roof and window line while retaining the factory rear bench.S2 And Turbo Donors Are RecommendedImage Credit: Carpoint. The first completed GT-K44 started life as a 944 S2 with the naturally aspirated 3.0-liter four-cylinder producing 211 horsepower. Finished in Oak Green with a Pascha-pattern interior, it serves as Carpoint's demonstration of what the conversion can become.Customers aren't restricted to the S2. Carpoint also recommends the 220- and 250-horsepower versions of the 944 Turbo, while both manual and automatic cars can be used as long as the desired transmission was already fitted to the donor.Additional customization can include wheels, suspension, exhaust systems, upholstery, seats, audio equipment, and other interior details. Carpoint can also help customers locate a suitable base car if they don't already own one.€100,000 — Before You Buy The PorscheImage Credit: Carpoint. Here's where things get serious. Carpoint charges €100,000 net for the standard GT-K44 conversion, with optional equipment and additional work costing extra. The donor 944 isn't included, nor are transportation and delivery beyond collection in Karlsruhe. German private customers would also have applicable VAT added, while taxes for international customers depend on the relevant rules and export arrangements. That makes this an exceptionally expensive way to turn a relatively attainable classic Porsche into something much rarer. Still, considering each GT-K44 requires hundreds of hours of fabrication and is built around its owner's specifications, this isn't intended to be an ordinary restoration. The 944 was already one of Porsche's most practical classics, but if you think it still needs a bigger trunk, give Carpoint a call, and they'll sort you out.If you want more stories like this, follow Guessing Headlights on Yahoo so you don't miss what's coming next.
