The state of Texas allows eligible residents who are temporarily living outside the state to renew their vehicle registration without returning to Texas.According to the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles, you can renew your Texas vehicle registration online or by mail by self-certifying that your vehicle is out of the state. This temporarily waives your vehicle's typical emissions inspection requirement. However, according to the Travis County Tax Office, once you return to Texas, you must obtain an emissions inspection within three days and pay the state's portion of the inspection fee at a county tax office. Emissions inspections begin on November 1 in Bexar County. Does it cost extra for out-of-state students to renew their Texas registration?No, the state does not charge an additional fee for out-of-state students renewing their Texas registration tags. According to the DMV, the standard state registration fee for passenger vehicles and light trucks is $51.75, plus local processing fees.
