There’s nothing quite like the humbling feeling of running out of gas. One minute, you’re cruising, the next your car sputters and dies, leaving you stranded on the side of the road.
It’s as embarrassing as it is a hassle.
A man whose garage is giving away a 2023 Toyota Supra had the displeasure of this experience while en route to fill up with E85 octane. E85 provides more power than 93 octane, but finding a gas station that carries it isn’t always easy.
This may be part of the reason why Parker Jones (@stangry5.0) ended up running the sporty Toyota until it hit empty. Filling up brought another surprise in the form of the size of the Toyota Supra’s tank.
How Much Gas Fits in the Supra’s Tank?
Jones’ video begins with him carrying a can of gasoline down a driveway. “Nobody told me Supras have such a small gas tank,” a text overlay reads before he explains why he needs to lug around extra fuel.
“All right, fellas, well. I made a little bit of an oopsie. As you can tell, involving fuel,” Jones says.
Jones approaches the gunmetal grey Toyota Supra. “I ran out of gas,” he says.

“We have approximately zero fuel. Currently this thing is on its E85 tune. And we’re like 15 minutes from the closest E85 gas station,” Jones continues. “So, to call it safe, I’m gonna use some … expensive fuel here to make sure it’s good to make to the gas station.”
Then Jones pours fuel into the Supra. “And there we go. That’s probably like four gallons I would say.”
“That Kinda Scared Me"
Jones starts the car and revs the engine, then points the camera at the fuel gauge. He’s stunned to see that it says those four gallons filled the empty tank roughly halfway.
“These may have really small tanks. Cause that got half a tank of gas. That’s crazy,” he says.
Then he heads back to a gas station to fill the tank the rest of the way.
“Even though we have half a tank, still gonna fill it up with E85,” he says.
He’s shocked by the sports car’s fuel capacity.
“This thing must have a really small tank. Interesting, yeah, like maybe a 13-gallon tank, which is very surprising to me,” he explains.

What’s Toyota Supra’s Fuel Capacity?
According to Car and Driver, the 2023 Supra has a 13.7 gallon gas tank (51.9 liters), which Jones says he finds "surprising."
This isn’t the first time a performance car that rolled off of Toyota’s assembly line was noted as having a small fuel threshold, however. During an episode of Top Gear, Jeremy Clarkson said he thinks the Lexus LFA’s 19.3 gallon tank is too small. The V-10 Lexus VFA gets about 11 miles per gallon, while the six-cylinder Supra can get up to 27mpg on the highway, 19 in the city.
Tank size notwithstanding, some commenters who replied to Jones’ video were shocked that he let the tank get empty in the first place.
“How do people run out of gas? For me once that yellow light comes on I’m already panicking driving to the gas station,” one person penned.
They have a point. Auto enthusiasts often caution drivers against allowing their fuel supply to deplete entirely. That’s because “it can cause different engine parts to overheat,” Progressive reports, and “negatively affects several important components.”
