During a media roundtable this month, Audi CEO Gernot Döllner was asked about a third-gen R8, and not only did he mention the Temerario's redline without any encouragement, indicating he knows it off the top of his head, but he laughed and called a new R8 a "good idea."Audi CEO Gives More Hints That a New R8 Is ComingAudiAccording to The Drive, the Audi boss said, "It's a great V8 engine in the Temerario. 10,000 rev, really outstanding engine." This response to a question about a new R8 was not confirmation thereof, but it strongly suggested that such a thing is likely. After a pause, he went on to talk up the continued benefit of being part of the Volkswagen Group, under the same corporate umbrella as Lamborghini, and he pointed out that even when Audi shares parts with other VW Group brands, it creates its own thing. "The C Sport [Audi's internal name for the production version of the Concept C] is an example that we build a car with character based on a Porsche platform," said Döllner. "And the result is a clear Audi, and that's our approach to have our customers in mind and come up with the right solutions."AdvertisementAdvertisementRelated: Audi’s Plug-In Hybrid R8 Supercar Could Look Like ThisIn other words, if Audi does leverage the Temerario's technology for a new R8, it won't be a restyled Lamborghini. Döllner reportedly ended the discussion by laughing and saying, "Good idea." According to The Drive, this wasn't the sort of embarrassed laugh that comes when an exec wants the questions to stop, and it wasn't the sort of shy laugh that happens when the person being quizzed is presented with an idea they haven't yet considered. And it's not the first time that the possibility of an R8 revival has looked real.Plenty of Clues to Suggest a New R8 Is Already In DevelopmentCars & BidsWhile the production version of the Concept C/C Sport will sit between the discontinued TT and R8, replacing neither of them, its design would surely inform a new R8, and according to an Autocar report from roughly a year ago, a new R8 will appear in late 2027. More recently, Audi Sport Managing Director Rolf Michl revealed that Audi is weighing the business case of a new R8, saying that it needs to be profitable and thus indicating that Audi has already discussed the prospect behind closed doors. He may also have been preparing us for a scary price, albeit one that will almost certainly be below the $300,000 (before options) of the Temerario.Whatever it costs, and even without V10 power, a new Audi supercar arriving next year would be cause to rejoice. And since the Temerario's powertrain is designed to last at least two life cycles, a 2027 release wouldn't mean a shortened production run. The evidence of a new R8 being a real possibility seems to be mounting, and it's likely only a matter of time before Audi confirms what appears to be an open secret: Ingolstadt wants a new supercar, it just needs to build anticipation to the right level so it sells well.AdvertisementAdvertisementThis story was originally published by Autoblog on May 27, 2026, where it first appeared in the News section.
