Unlike its two-row truck counterpart, the R1S is a three-row SUV with seven seats.AdvertisementAdvertisementRivian launched the R1S for 2022, and an updated version arrived for 2025 with enhancements to its powertrains and technology. The R1S competes against other electric three-row SUVs such as the Cadillac Vistiq, Hyundai Ioniq 9, and Volvo EX90.What's NewRivian Assistant AI-enabled voice assistant feature introduced for Connect+ subscribersForest Edge green interior returns for limited availability on Dual Motor Max Pack modelsThis page will be updated with more insights and photos as information becomes available. What We ThinkFew SUVs—electric or otherwise—match the Rivian R1S for breadth of capability. With three-row versatility, upscale materials, impressive on-road performance, and serious off-road chops, it stands out as one of the most complete vehicles on sale.AdvertisementAdvertisementAs a three-row SUV, the R1S works well overall. The third row is tight and not especially easy to access, but it's nicely trimmed and equipped, just like the seats ahead. With all the seats upright cargo room is limited, but the large frunk adds plenty of useful, secure storage space. On pavement or dirt, the R1S delivers amazing acceleration and assured handling, aided by an excellent one-pedal driving system. Its sophisticated air suspension can make the SUV feel soft and composed or firm and athletic depending on drive mode, and it can raise the body for extra ground clearance. In quad-motor form, the R1S offers a driving experience unlike anything else, but even the dual-motor version is more than sufficiently capable. There are a few concerns. Range is solid, but faster charging would make the R1S a stronger road-trip companion. The brake pedal feels soft, and the touchscreen remains a poor substitute for physical controls.AdvertisementAdvertisementEven so, the R1S continues to greatly impress with its mix of performance, utility, and refinement.Top-Ranked Competitors:Hyundai Ioniq 9Volvo EX90Porsche Cayenne ElectricMercedes EQS SUVMotorTrend TestedRivian builds the R1S in several powertrain configurations, with two, three, and four motors available.R1S Dual Motor StandardDrivetrain: Dual-motor AWD (one front, one rear)Horsepower/Torque: 533 hp/610 lb-ftAcceleration (0–60 mph): 4.5 seconds (est)R1S Dual Motor PerformanceDrivetrain: Dual-motor AWD (one front, one rear)Horsepower/Torque: 665 hp/829 lb-ftAcceleration (0–60 mph): 3.5 secondsR1S Tri MotorDrivetrain: Three-motor AWD (one front, two rear)Horsepower/Torque: 850 hp/1,103 lb-ftAcceleration (0–60 mph): 2.9 secondsAdvertisementAdvertisementR1S Quad MotorDrivetrain: Four-motor AWD (one per wheel)Horsepower/Torque: 1,025 hp/1,198 lb-ftAcceleration (0–60 mph): 2.6 secondsEV Range and ChargingEvery R1S is built with a NACS charging port, the standard designed by Tesla.
