UPDATE: 2026/05/20 4:30 EST Full Image Gallery ReleasedThis article has been updated with a full gallery of images from Mercedes-AMG. The original test continues below. After a very, very long teaser campaign that started more than a year ago, Mercedes-AMG is finally ready to reveal the GT 4-Door Coupe, a fully electric second generation of the company's hot and heavy fastback sedan. Coming in GT 55 and GT 63 trim levels, the new EV boasts a three-motor powertrain layout, with axial-flux technology and a sophisticated battery giving it four-figure horsepower ratings and a staggering 600-kilowatt charge speed. Set to arrive in US dealers by the end of the year, it's officially putting the Porsche Taycan on notice. Two Trim Levels, Three Motors, Four-Wheel Drive The 2027 Mercedes-AMG GT 55 4-Door Coupe is the entry-level model, with three drive motors providing a maximum of 805 horsepower and 1,328 pound-feet of torque for short bursts – the continuous power output is a still impressive 503 hp and the same amount of twist. AMG 4Matic+ all-wheel drive is standard, as is a 106-kilowatt-hour nickel-cobalt-manganese-aluminum battery that should enable a maximum WLTP range of 434 miles on the WLTP scale; figure an EPA rating of 370 miles or so.Mercedes-Benz Go for the GT 63 4-Door Coupe model and power output rises to an incredible 1,153-hp burst (711 hp continuous), with 1,475 lb-ft of twist and a WLTP range of 432 miles. Equipped with the AMG Performance package, either the 55 or the 63 can hit a top speed of 186 miles per hour, shading the Porsche Taycan Turbo's 162 mph or the Tesla Model S Plaid's 163 mph (far below the 200 mph Tesla once claimed for the now-discontinued sport sedan). The GT 55 accelerates to 60 in 2.3 seconds, while the GT 63 does the deed in 2.2 seconds. The headline-grabbing numbers come courtesy of some very advanced technology, starting with the axial flux electric motors whose electromagnetic windings run parallel to the rotation, rather than perpendicular in a conventional "radial-flux" motor. The technology, developed by Mercedes partner YASA, enables very thin, light construction and impressive power output – the single front motor is a scant 3.5 inches wide, while each of the two rear motors are 3.2 inches wide.Mercedes-Benz/YasaThe lithium battery also boasts some clever engineering rethinks, starting with tall, narrow cylindrical cells that are easier to cool thanks to quicker heat dissipation and reduced heat sink. The cells reside in an aluminum housing, which is lighter and provides less heat retention than conventional steel housings, and each unit has its own direct cooling circuit for precise temperature control in a variety of driving and charging situations.Mercedes-BenzAs a result, the 800-volt battery is capable of rapid discharge, crucial for consistent track performance, as well as an impressive 600-kilowatt recharging speed – at or near the top of the quickest-charging EVs available today – which should allow the EV to add up to 287 miles of range in just 10 minutes. By keeping the battery cells within a narrowly defined range, the AMG GT 4-Door Coupe is able to both go very quickly and charge very quickly, a boon for EV driving enthusiasts everywhere. Eyeball-Straining Performance (And Styling) The 2027 Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe, seen here in GT 63 trim, looks like no other vehicle to come from the company. Mercedes' penchant for badge-shaped lighting appears liberally on the fastback, including both headlamps, which are connected by a full-width LED light bar in the same design family as the CLA-Class compact sedan. A bottom-feeder grille shows up on the front end, with illuminated vertical strakes to recall AMG's signature Panamericana grille design.Mercedes-BenzAround back, the AMG GT 4-Door gets a sextet of round taillights that again feature the three-pointed star as a design element, residing under a narrow LED strip that arches over the entire rear end. The gloss black rear hatch panel has an unusual striated texture, sitting below an active rear spoiler that actuates at a variety of different angles depending on vehicle speed and drive mode. The coming and going views of the 4-Door Coupe promise to be the most divisive, with unusual design elements that may not to be everyone's tastes.Mercedes-Benz Between the boldly styled front and rear ends, however, is a rather graceful, understated fastback profile that avoids the humpbacked appearance of its predecessor. Despite housing a battery in the floor, the new GT 4-Door Coupe is 1.6 inches lower than the outgoing model, with subtle sheet metal creases and gloss black side skirts that give it a purposeful, sleek stance. Twenty-inch wheels are standard, while aerodynamically optimized 21s are available as an option. Like Living In A Computer The cabin of the GT 4-Door Coupe is as futuristic as its exterior, with a 10.2-inch gauge cluster and 14.0-inch center touchscreen integrated into a single beveled surface that's angled toward the driver. There's also a standard 14.0-inch passenger screen to allow the copilot to handle navigation and audio duties or to simply tune out with a Bluetooth entertainment stream all their own. As with the headlight and grille design, the dashboard takes a note or two from the latest Mercedes-Benz EVs, including a pair of round, galvanized steel HVAC outlets integrated into the glass bezel itself for a sleeker appearance.2027 Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe electric interior (8)The GT 63 4-Door Coupe gets a trio of rotary dials, called the AMG Race Engineer control unit, on the tunnel-shaped center console. These knobs help tailor the driving experience of the car, including traction controls, accelerator response, and suspension settings, and Mercedes says they have an intuitive and tactile feel that adds to the enjoyment. The console also incorporates two wireless charging pads and two illuminated cupholders, as well as a three-dimensional design element that hides the two center climate vents.Mercedes-Benz There's also a standard panoramic glass roof with "Sky Control" electrochromic segments that can instantly turn opaque. The AMG-themed design of the segments incorporates a pair of Affalterbach crests over the front row that are illuminated for even more visual interest. Typical of a modern Mercedes, they are just part of a multi-element ambient lighting system that also includes the HVAC vents, door panels, and dashboard trim, lighting up in a variety of colors that the driver can select individually or leave to the specific settings of the drive mode controller. Significant Chassis Advancements Under The Skin Riding on the AMG Electric Architecture (AMG.EA), the 2027 GT 4-Door Coupe incorporates a number of tricks to help it handle as well as it sprints. The stiff structure, crucial for any high-performance car, forms the basis for a body in white that's made of aluminum, steel, and fiber-reinforced composite materials, with the high-voltage battery integrated into the skateboard chassis for improved rigidity and a lower center of gravity. The 55 model comes standard with AMG Ride Control+ air suspension, featuring four-corner air springs with three settings that should provide decent ride comfort.Mercedes-Benz Optional on the 55 and standard on the 63 is AMG Active Ride Control, which incorporates a larger pressure reservoir for faster mode switching and a larger performance/comfort envelope. The adaptive dampers are hydraulically linked to minimize body roll, eliminating the need for separate anti-roll bars to keep weight down a bit. Further reducing unsprung mass is a set of multilink control arms that are all made from robust forged aluminum. An active rear axle provides up to six degrees of out-of-phase steering for improved low-speed maneuverability, while at higher speeds, the rear wheels turn in-phase with the fronts for greater stability.Improving handling further is an array of standard and optional active aerodynamic elements. In addition to the mechanized rear decklid spoiler, the 2027 Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe includes active louvers on the front end, including the center air intake and brake ducts to provide an ideal balance of cooling, aerodynamics, and downforce depending on the driving situation. An active rear diffuser and Venturi-inducing underbody elements are optional on the fastback GT.Mercedes-Benz Newfound EV Performance Coming Later This Year Pricing has yet to be announced, but don't expect it to be cheap. Considering the slower, plug-in hybrid 2026 AMG GT 63 S E Performance costs $200,500 to start, we'd expect the all-electric sports sedan to come in at around $220,000 at least. That number would put it in contention with the $221,400 Porsche Taycan Turbo S, but any more than that and the Mercedes EV would come dangerously close to the faster, more aggressive Taycan Turbo GT, which starts at $243,700. Also included in its list of rivals is the $249,500 Lucid Air Sapphire, which should offer a similar split of high performance and comfort as the AMG GT 4-Door.The 2027 Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe will launch in the US by the end of 2026, meaning we don't have long to wait before these all-electric monsters start bullying Hellcats and ZR1s at stoplights everywhere. The GT 55 will launch first, followed by the GT 63 early next year.2027 Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe electric yellow studio exterior (3)Source: Mercedes-AMG
