Most mere mortals would be satisfied with the current offering, thinking they've achieved the lifelong dream of owning and driving some of the best cars ever made. However, there are some clients and customers who have the means and the imagination for something more unique. Thankfully, Porsche has Sonderwunsch, the bespoke department in charge of making dreams come true for the discerning and rich customer.PorscheThe Sky's the LimitThe Drive was able to sit down with Alexander Fabig of Porsche's Sonderwunsch during the recent Monterey Car Week, where he revealed some pretty surprising insight into just how far Porsche is willing to go for its demanding Sonderwunsch clients. A key highlight of the interview is when Fabig is asked whether engine and manual swaps are possible; he replies that more people care about rowing through the gears than adding pure horsepower.AdvertisementAdvertisementIt goes further; for example, Fabig was asked if Porsche would be able to produce a manual Panamera; he enthusiastically says, "Yes, yes, yes. That's very good; I will use this as an example from now on [when people ask about the Sonderwunsch]."Next, he was asked what happened to the rumored Panamera convertible project. Fabig answered by saying he uses the Panamera Cabriolet as an example of how far Sonderwunsch is willing to indulge its clients, saying specifically, "If you are asking for it, we would do it, but we are not working on that. It's not an active project."PorscheOpen to AllFabig also explained that Sonderwunsch allows people to be the creator of their own cars, with the skilled expertise of the Porsche designers and engineers, of course. Also, Fabig said that regulations and road laws play a huge part in the considerations of both the brand and the customer. It all boils down to whether the customer wants to have a road-legal car or not. While the Sonderwunsch projects are often unattainable and often geared towards the 911, Porsche recently expanded the model list of cars that can receive the program's signature treatment. Fabig had already confirmed in another interview that the brand is already getting inquiries for bespoke treatment on some four-door models, but most inquiries are still centered around the two-door offerings. Lastly, the program now also accepts restoration or 'restomod' projects of older Porsche models for those who want to refresh their current cars and add a twist of individuality. This story was originally published by Autoblog on Aug 29, 2026, where it first appeared in the News section.
