New Gas Porsche Macan Will Revive 4-CylinderMotorTrend - MotorTrendWhen Porsche decided to kill the gasoline-powered Macan this summer, it also meant the sports car brand no longer had anything with a four-cylinder engine. The four-cylinder Boxster and Cayman ended production at the end of 2025, and the current Macan is electric only. But Porsche has recognized it needs a B-segment or compact SUV with an internal combustion engine, and will launch a gas Macan successor next year. And yes, it will bring back a four-cylinder engine."We need to bring the Macan with a combustion engine back to life," said Michael Leiters, the former McLaren CEO who became chairman of the executive board of Porsche AG in January. The Macan is Porsche's bestseller and sold particularly well in North America. But the automaker announced in 2019 the next-gen version would go all-electric and launched the Macan EV in 2024.Choice of Gas Engine or Plug-In HybridThe gas-powered successor uses the internal code name "M1" and will ride on Audi's Premium Platform Combustion (PPC) architecture. It is due in 2028 with a gas engine or as a plug-in hybrid and be sold alongside the all-electric Macan. The new model is expected to be built in Leipzig, as is the Macan EV.As part of its latest turnaround plan, Porsche expects to offer two models with combustion engines (including hybrids) for every electric vehicle in the lineup. It says the powertrain lineup will include 4-, 6-, and 8-cylinder engines, naturally aspirated engines, turbo and eTurbo combustion engines, plug-in hybrids, performance hybrids, and EVs, as well as manual, automatic, and PDK transmissions.
