For this year, BMW adds its Drive Recorder to the Parking Assistant Professional package. What We ThinkHaving first arrived for the 2021 model year, the G22-, G23-, and G26- generation BMW 4 Series is taking what we expect is its final lap around the sun before it gets redesigned. For the most part, we've enjoyed our time with the German automaker's compact coupe, convertible, and fastback.Punchy, refined engines are the stars of the show. Not only do the turbocharged I-4 and I-6 powerplants supply commendable acceleration, but they're also efficient. As expected from BMW, composed suspension tuning is a hallmark of the 4 Series lineup.AdvertisementAdvertisementPracticality varies across the 2027 BMW 4 Series' body styles. The Gran Coupe fastback is spacious both for passengers and cargo, while the 4 Series Coupe is well-suited for grand touring with its generous enclosed trunk. The convertible is great for open-top motoring, but it's the worst choice for hauling people and things. The 4 Series' front fascia is an unfortunate weak spot for an otherwise attractive design. We've also found fault in BMW's interior styling, which is sedate and spartan. As a sporty coupe, the 4 Series leaves something to be desired in terms of driver engagement, behaving more like a comfy grand tourer in the real world. If you can get over the faults of the current 4 Series lineup, there's still a lot to love about BMW's range of compacts at the end of its production cycle. The vehicles bearing the 4 Series nameplate impress with tech, performance, and luxury. All BMW needs to do is improve on the 4 Series' styling and driver engagement to have a real winner on its hands for the next-generation model.Top-Ranked Competitors:Audi A5Acura Integra Type SMercedes-Benz C-ClassBMW 3 SeriesBMW i4MotorTrend TestedThe 4 Series carries over with a pair of powertrains, each of which is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and supported by a 48-volt mild hybrid system.
