Issues arose with the car after a dashboard light reported that the front drive motor was disabled. Although the vehicle still drove, Sam noted a significant reduction in performance. Seeking another opinion, Sam contacted Tesla, which reviewed the error codes using data from the Tesla app. MotorBiscuit reported that, without ever viewing the car in person, Tesla recommended replacing the full front drive unit for a little more than $5,500. Eventually, Sam connected with fellow YouTuber Alex, host of the Out of Spec Renew channel, who remotely accessed Sam's Tesla and determined that the problem wasn't with the motor itself but with one of the vehicle's sensors.According to MotorBiscuit, the sensor turned out to be the same part used in the Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric Drive, and a Mercedes dealership had it for about $70. After a labor-intensive teardown, Sam got the sensor from Mercedes, installed it, reassembled the car, and got the front motor working again.Why does it matter?Tesla reportedly treats this drive unit as a non-serviceable assembly, meaning owners and many repair shops are often steered toward a full replacement even when the failure comes from a much smaller component. Alex helped identify a workaround that avoided replacing the entire drive unit.MotorBiscuit reported that Sam's repair also involved a $50 third-party fix for a secondary coolant valve and $20 replacement Xenon headlights.
