Drive Hyundai's New Concept—Just Not in Real LIfeHyundaiHyundai's latest concept is all about extreme off-roading, with its armor-like body panels, industrial-looking wheels and tires, lifted suspension, and an entire catalog of rock-crawling accessories tacked on. It's a tough-looking, hunkering, angular SUV, and it's completely… digital. That's because the Crater Concept, as it's called, is designed for a video game.In this case, that game is The Crew Motorfest, an open-world driving game set on the Hawaiian island of O'ahu and which has about 10 million players worldwide. The Crater's virtual debut marks the first time a Korean automaker has added a vehicle to the popular online game. But Hyundai says it wasn't simply interested in including its brand in the game's garage. It says the collaboration with Ubisoft, the game's maker, is intended to introduce players to the "personality" of its growing XRT off-road lineup.HyundaiThe Crater Concept was actually developed at the Hyundai America Technical Center in Irvine, California, as a preview of what to expect from the automaker's evolving XRT design language. While the concept has yet to appear in physical form, its rugged styling and electric powertrain—yes, it's an EV—are meant to showcase Hyundai's vision for future off-road-capable EVs.Players will encounter the Crater Concept as part of the season 11 update of The Crew Motorfest, which centers on off-road driving. The collaboration also introduces a new winch mechanic that allows players to recover from obstacles or pull them out of the way while exploring rougher terrain.Customization also plays a big part. Players can modify the Crater Concept, display it through the game's community-based Custom Show mode, or create their own off-road challenges using TrackForge, the game's course-building tool. The Crew Motorfest, originally released in 2023, combining realistic vehicle models with festival-style events—think digital Gridlife—extensive customization, and an expansive vehicle roster that includes everything from classic muscle cars to modern supercars and off-road machines. The 2027 Hyundai Tucson XRT PRO.HyundaiThe partnership is part of Hyundai's push to reach younger audiences outside of traditional marketing avenues. The automaker has expanded its gaming footprint in recent years, becoming one of the first global automakers to establish a branded experience on Roblox before partnering with Epic Games on promotions tied to Fortnite and Rocket League. Hyundai has also appeared in games such as Asphalt Legends and Top Eleven. And Hyundai says the Crater Concept is only the beginning, with additional vehicles joining The Crew Motorfest in future updates. And who knows, with enough interest, perhaps Hyundai will bring to life some of these digital creations.
