Volvo Hints at New Large and Small SUV ModelsMarc Urbano - Car and Driver (Marc Urbano - Car and Driver)Volvo executives hinted at new SUV models, large and small, at a recent roundtable. The EX30, an electric subcompact model that was canceled for the U.S. after just two model years, will get a replacement soon.A new full-size SUV model may be in the cards, too, and would likely be built at Volvo's plant in South Carolina. The potential return of station wagons to the Volvo lineup may be most exciting for enthusiasts, but in the meantime we can expect the automaker's SUV lineup to continue expanding. At a recent roundtable, Volvo executives, including CEO Håkan Samuelsson, hinted at a new entry-level SUV to replace the recently departed EX30 and a U.S.-built full-size flagship SUV to sit above the current mid-size XC90.EX30 Replacement on the WayVolvo EX30Marc Urbano - Car and Driver (Marc Urbano - Car and Driver)A new SUV model is "coming soon" to the more affordable end of the Volvo lineup, with executives saying that this upcoming vehicle will serve as the replacement for the EX30. The EX30 was sold in the U.S. for just two model years and briefly held the title of the least-expensive Volvo model, with a starting price of $40,345 for the single-motor model, undercutting the gas-powered XC40 SUV. Volvo dropped the EX30 from its U.S. lineup after just two model years due to tariffs and the elimination of the federal EV tax credit.AdvertisementAdvertisementVolvo says this new model will have a "similar price point" as the EX30, and we expect it to also serve as the replacement for the XC40-based EX40 EV; it may even adopt that same nomenclature.New Full-Size, Three-Row SUV Could Be Built in U.S.The other product discussed by Volvo executives was a new model that Samuelsson described as a "family-oriented, bigger car" that would be built at the company's plant in South Carolina. We take this to mean that this would be an SUV larger than the current XC90. Samuelsson said it would have multiple powertrain options, meaning it would likely be offered as a hybrid and not exclusively as an EV like the EX90 SUV that's also built in South Carolina.Volvo EX90Andi Hedrick - Car and Driver (Andi Hedrick - Car and Driver)We asked Volvo about the possibility of an extended-range plug-in hybrid powertrain like the one found in the China-market XC70 SUV, and Samuelsson said that this type of setup was a strong possibility for the U.S. market. He mentioned the company's upcoming second-generation plug-in hybrid system that would put a greater emphasis on electric propulsion and use the engine more as a "backup." This sounds like a strong powertrain candidate for this new SUV.Volvo previously announced it would build a new hybrid model at this facility by 2030, so that gives us some idea of timing for this new vehicle to arrive.
