There's the RF Launch Edition, the 30th and 35th Anniversary Editions, plus the 100th Anniversary Edition that commemorated Mazda's centenary. There are also country-specific special models, the most recent of which we know is the Japan-only Roadster 12R (it's still called Roadster over there), which came from the factory with 200 hp.Cars & BidsAs Rare as it GetsThere's no doubt the special, limited-run MX-5 models will be sought after by collectors someday. That said, four Mazda dealers in Japan are taking it further. As a semi-official model, Kanto Mazda, Shizuoka Mazda, Tokai Mazda, and Koshin Mazda will release what's called the Roadster FSW Ver.2.AdvertisementAdvertisementThe name doesn't exactly roll off the tongue, but if you missed the photos, these MX-5s are painted yellow, a color not offered in the official catalog. That said, the lack of a yellow option is a strange omission from the lineup, given that the MX-5 and Roadster have traditionally been offered in fun colors. So, why will it be rare? Only six will be made.Mazda Roadster FSW Ver.2 (Mazda MX-5)Not Just Dealer SpecialsWe wouldn't dismiss the FSW Ver.2 as a dealer special. While it's a collaboration among the four dealers mentioned above, Mazda Engineering & Technology paints each car. What makes that special is that it's the division that builds the company's concept cars, per Japanese Nostalgic Car.That also means that it's an OE-quality model, and not just an MX-5 that's been sent to the paint booth. These cars are finished in Sunflower Yellow, which was known in the U.S. as Competition Yellow. That color was last offered on the facelifted version of the previous-generation model (NC). Here's to hoping it joins the standard color range someday.MazdaBut Wait, There's MoreThe exterior isn't the only part that's painted in Sunflower Yellow. In true ND MX-5 fashion, even the interior has been color-matched, namely the upper door trim, air conditioning vents, and key fob. On top of that, each of the six cars will come with a Mazda E&T to authenticate it and, well, bragging rights.AdvertisementAdvertisementFor those interested, it's an extra ¥1,452,000 (about $9,400) on top of the standard MX-5/Roadster, and the buyers will be picked through a lottery system. Still, it's not as pricey as, say, special paint on other brands, and the price also includes an experiential package for the lucky owners. It includes a two-day, one-night tour of Hiroshima, plus a visit to Mazda headquarters, the Mazda Museum, and the E&T center.
