Jaguar is betting big on a total transformation of the venerable British brand. The company is embracing a philosophy that it calls Exuberant Modernism that includes adopting a blocky design language that looks nothing like anything in the automaker's past.JaguarJag previewed its Exuberant Modernism philosophy with the polarizing Type 00 concept. Recently, the company unveiled the Type 01 Prototype as a preview of the first production model to wear this heavily chiseled aesthetic. The four-door grand tourer just showed up at the Formula E Monaco E‑Prix, wearing a striped wrap that accentuates the blocky body shape. Jaguar released photos, giving us the best look yet at the machine. And it does appear to be a bit more grounded in reality than the concept was. Take A Look At The Type 01 JaguarDespite the body wrap, many details on the Type 01 are still visible. The front end consists of a large flat section with a relatively small, rectangular opening at the bottom. The running lights consist of skinny, illuminated strips on the upper and lower sections. Tiny square sensors indicate this prototype is far enough along to have consideration for driver assistance technology. In profile, the Type 01 has a steeply raked windshield that leads to a flat roof. The elements give the car a sporty silhouette with proportions more akin to a coupe than to a four-door sedan. Flush-mounted door handles give the flanks a smooth shape. There are only small fender flares, which lend the car a slab-sided appearance.JaguarThe rear follows the flat styling from the front. The taillights are just two stacked illuminated strips on each side. The trunk opening appears fairly narrow compared to the car's full width, and the liftover height seems fairly tall, making loading cargo more awkward than in a typical family sedan."To achieve our vision for Type 01, we not only harnessed our Formula E know‑how but also embedded the competition mindset of Jaguar TCS Racing in our engineering teams. This helped us develop innovative solutions for our luxury four‑door GT that drives like no other electric car."- Rawdon Glover, Jaguar Managing Director, Unanswered Questions JaguarThe Type 01 will launch as an all-wheel-drive EV using "fast‑switching silicon carbide‑powered inverters." The sedan is arriving with three electric motors, making an estimated 986 horsepower and over 959 pound-feet of torque. The range is projected to be around 400 miles. However, Jag isn't yet offering details about the batteries or charging specs.According to Jaguar, the Type 01 name is meant to evoke the brand's historical use of "Type" for its models, such as the C-Type race car, the iconic E-Type, and the more recent F-Type. The 0 represents that there are zero emissions, and the 1 indicates that this is the first step in a new era for Jag.JLRThe Jaguar Type 00 concept (above) was our first glimpse at the new design language, and it has a clear relation to the Type 01. Both of them share a boxy nose and sleek roof. Shortly after Type 00's debut, several Jaguar dealers expressed concern about the automaker's transformation, especially since the company was only projecting 10,000 annual sales for the electric sedan.Jaguar will unveil the production-spec Type 01 later this year, suggesting it will go on sale in 2027. While the vehicle is launching with all-wheel drive, don't be surprised if a rear-drive version comes eventually. Offering a less powerful, usually rear-wheel-drive variant, at a lower cost is the norm, even among luxury EVs.type01-front-tunnel-16x9Source: Jaguar
