It seems reasonable to most customers that when you visit a quick lube shop, there might be an upcharge for convenience and the overall service being provided. But a viral TikTok clip captures an extreme example, where a set of new windshield wipers was going to cost one motorist around $100. The clip from creator JustAngelA (@angibad058800) recounts her recent visit to Jiffy Lube, where she says she was told in no uncertain terms that the cheapest wipers available for her car cost $40 per blade. The shop then planned to charge a $20 installation fee for the wipers, causing her to pause and look for cheaper options elsewhere. When a visit to a nearby AutoZone proved that she was being grossly overcharged, she took to social media to express her outrage. “I said, ‘Well, if I go to AutoZone, is there a cheaper blade, and I can just bring it back?’ He was like, ‘It's the same price.’... I said, ‘Well, bye,’” she said in the clip that’s been viewed more than 8,800 times. AutoZone Windshield Wipers: A Discount With Service At the AutoZone, Angela started out inquiring about price, specifically asking how much a pair of windshield wipers for her car would cost. The answer was definitive: $19.99 per blade, or half of what Jiffy Lube wanted to charge. But that wasn't the only difference. When she asked about installation, the quick response was that they would take care of it on the spot. The employee even pointed her toward a bottle of Rain-X as an optional add-on, suggesting it as a useful upgrade but not making it seem like a requirement. In only a few minutes, the transaction was done, and the wipers were installed, with a total bill of $45.43. At less than half of what she'd been quoted earlier, her hesitation and diligence paid off in a big way. Tell us what you think! View Comments What stood out just as much as the price was how little effort the job seemed to require. In the video, she describes the installation as taking only a couple of seconds, with each blade snapping into place almost instantly. “Literally like five seconds per blade,” she said, still sounding surprised by how quickly it was finished. Angela said she tried to tip the employee for the help, offering to send money digitally when she realized she didn't have any cash, but the employee declined. “Thank you, AutoZone,” was her sort of mantra throughout the clip, repeating it more than once as she recaps the experience. Her conclusion for the viewers was direct and unequivocal: if you need windshield wipers, skip the quick-lube shop and head to a parts store instead. Auto Chains Show Their Differences In the comments section, plenty of viewers said the outcome didn't surprise them, adding that similar chains routinely install wiper blades at no extra cost, something that still seemed to come as new information to others watching the clip. “AutoZone and O’Reilly are really good about helping you out. Yeah Jiffy Lube forgot to put oil back in a friend of mine‘s car when she got her oil changed. I ended up going to pick her up on the side of the highway after she drove it almost 100 miles! The mechanic said that they forgot to put the oil in,” one commenter noted, painting even starker differences between the various companies. Others used the video as an opportunity to share their own experiences, some simply noting that they preferred handling small maintenance items themselves or through retail parts stores. There was some debate over the level of service available at different retail and service chains, but the overall tone reflected a familiar divide in how drivers approach routine maintenance. For a relatively simple fix like windshield wipers, the gap in pricing can come down to how and where the work is done. Basic blades are widely available in the $15 to $25 range, with mid-tier options climbing slightly higher depending on brand and materials. Installation, meanwhile, is typically straightforward enough that many parts retailers offer to handle it for free as a courtesy. Service-focused shops operate differently. That's because labor, overhead, and the convenience of staying in your car and bundling multiple services in one visit can all factor into the final cost. For some customers, that trade-off is worth it. For others, as we see in this clip, it only takes Angela one side-by-side comparison to start raising questions and establishing barriers around what is acceptable versus what could be viewed as price gouging.
