An oil change is basic maintenance most cars need every 5,000 to 7,500 miles. It’s so simple, in fact, that many owners choose to do it themselves. But according to one woman who brought her car to Jiffy Lube, technicians managed to cause a serious issue during the visit and still let her drive away. TikTok creator Corinne Clarke (@cecespammmm) posted a short clip she filmed while still in the shop, garnering over 402,000 views at the time of writing. In the video, she films herself looking confused before turning the camera toward technicians working around her car. “Jiffy Lube genuinely broke my muffler off my car and loaded it up in my trunk like it was just another day at the office,” she wrote in the video’s text overlay. The clip shows a technician placing the detached muffler in the trunk of her car. “Last time I get an oil change fr,” she joked in the caption of the video. Commenters Weigh In In the comments section, viewers debated what might’ve happened. Some said the shop should be responsible for the damage. “Girl they HAVE TO pay for this !!” one user wrote. “My bf worked for JL for years and they have insurance for these situations.” Others speculated the muffler may already have been close to failing. “I don’t think people understand how hard it is for a muffler to just come off,” another shared. “Ts was definitely about to fall off if this happened.” Some viewers suggested avoiding quick-lube chains entirely. “Yeah so ur always gonna be better off going straight to the dealership for an oil change,” a third wrote. Another shared a negative experience of their own: “Jiffy lube once GLUED my oil filter on,” they shared. Others believe the issue might not be catastrophic but still requires repair. “It was prob loose, just needs to be welded back on, but jiffy lube sucks go to take 5 or valvoline,” one commenter added. What Can Cause A Muffler To Come Off? A muffler plays an important role in how your car operates. It reduces engine noise, helps regulate exhaust flow, and limits the amount of harmful fumes released from the vehicle. According to a blog post by Dubizzle, several issues can cause a muffler to detach from a vehicle. Some common causes are corrosion in the exhaust pipe, damage to exhaust brackets, or a strong impact, such as if you hit a pothole. Drivers may notice a problem with the muffler if the vehicle suddenly becomes much louder than usual. Other possible signs include reduced acceleration, engine misfires, excessive fumes, and abnormally high fuel consumption. Experts do not recommend driving a vehicle without a muffler, as it’s highly hazardous for those around you. It’s not exactly clear if the technicians caused the damage or if Clarke’s muffler already had pre-existing issues. According to consumer advocacy expert Christopher Elliott, who responded to a reader with a similar question, Jiffy Lube does offer a limited repair warranty that may cover certain types of damage caused during service. The expert recommends contacting the company as soon as possible, documenting the damage, and having an independent third party inspect the car to determine what went wrong. “Jiffy Lube’s corporate structure means you may get bounced between a Jiffy Lube franchisee and the corporate office,” Elliott wrote. “Don’t be deterred.” Motor1 has reached out to Jiffy Lube via its contact form and Clarke via TikTok direct message for comment.
