Henry Ford revolutionized car manufacturing in the early 1900s, making the automobile an affordable prospect for normal folks. He did it by introducing a refined production line system, with interchangeable parts and a moving line, reducing the cost and time to manufacture the Ford Model T.Although the mainstream car manufacturing process is still mainly based on the same principles introduced by Ford in 1913, new technology like automated robot systems, more advanced paint systems and so on have taken the business of making cars to even higher, faster and more efficient levels. In this age of automation and spreadsheet management, there are still some companies that build cars by hand. Yep, real people, tools in hand, putting together cars, sewing expensive leather seats, and going the extra nine miles to create some of the most exquisite, most exclusive cars on the planet. Here are 10 of those companies. This list includes car companies that, to some degree, still build cars by hand. Some companies feature a fair measure of automation, others have zero automated processes in the game. Companies listed according to estimated cars made per year (it varies year-on-year). Bentley Estimated Cars Manufactured Per Year: 10,500 2026 Bentley Continental GT Speed front, three-quarterWalter Owen Bentley started his car company in 1919. A three-liter, four-cylinder engine, designed by Bentley, powered a simplistic but highly capable automobile, capable of exceeding 100 mph. In time, Bentley would turn out some of the finest automobiles on the planet, including some fabulously luxurious machines that inspired young and old. However, the company always seemed to flirt with financial ruin, for a variety of reasons. By 1997, it was acquired by the Volkswagen Group. With VW's backing and engineers in the game, the Bentley brand grew from strength to strength. Today, with some German automation in the mix, along with British artisans that create parts by hand, a Bentley Continental GT Speed requires 110 hours to put together. The hide of 11 cows is used for its interior, hand-stitched according to order. Rolls-Royce Estimated Cars Manufactured Per Year: 5,700 2025 Rolls-Royce Ghost Black Badge Series II front, three-quarterThe iconic Rolls-Royce brand, established in 1906 and widely believed to be the best luxury car brand in the world, is made in a state-of-the-art manufacturing plant in Goodwood, in the UK. Owner BMW has brought some German precision and automation to the manufacturing process, but a number of items are still hand-made. Like the Ghost Series II's seat material. Dubbed Duality Twill, the textile is a rayon fabric made from bamboo. Yep, that stuff that grows in swampy areas. Rolls-Royce says a complete Duality Twill interior requires around 2.2 million stitches, 11 miles of thread, and about 20 hours to complete.Despite some German automation, each Rolls-Royce takes a couple of months to complete, according to each customer's specific requirements. Aston Martin Estimated Cars Manufactured Per Year: 5,500 2026 Aston Martin Vantage S front, sideAston Martin, established in 1913, has also seen its fair share of financial hardship and challenges over the past 113 years. But the iconic maker of sports cars and GTs got a big break in 2020 when a consortium led by Canadian billionaire Lawrence Stroll and with stakeholders that includes Mercedes-Benz, took over the reins. Since then, Aston Martin has shown some great promise, with engine power provided by shareholder Mercedes-Benz.Aston Martin cars are made by hand in facilities in England and Wales, and the automaker has the capacity to churn out around 7,000 cars per annum, although recent years have been a little shy of this figure. Despite hypercars like the Valkyrie in the game, and a very active motorsport program in play, Aston Martin is currently facing some financial hardships, with profit margins taking a dive. Morgan Estimated Cars Manufactured Per Year: 500 2023 Morgan Super 3 front, three-quarterThe Morgan Motor Company is a famed coach building company that started building cars in 1909. This British company still builds its cars by hand, with its range including the cool and quirky Morgan 3, the Plus Four, and the Supersport. The three-wheeled, lightweight Morgan 3 is powered by a naturally-aspirated Ford three-cylinder engine, producing just 118 hp. Thanks to its 1,400-pound curb weight, the Morgan 3 can reach 130 mph. The company also had some V8s in the game, but the big engines have now been shelved.Amazingly, Morgan cars are hand-made in the same facility the company started out in, back in 1909. Morgan uses traditional materials like ash wood for frames in some of its cars, combined with modern technology like the small Ford engine. Toyota Century Estimated Cars Manufactured Per Year: 480 2018 Toyota Century front, three-quarterToyota, the world's leading car manufacturer, clearly has the mass production game pretty much sorted, rolling out millions of cars per year. Surprisingly, the massive corporation still builds one car by hand. It is the Century, a low volume limousine that has been made exclusively for the Japanese domestic market. Instead of the typical Toyota production line, a few highly trained and skilled craftspeople create each Century limousine. The process includes five stages: stamping, body, painting, assembly and inspection. The Century represents Toyota's finest, the best of the best. More recently, Toyota added an exclusive Century SUV to its comprehensive catalog. Bugatti Estimated Cars Manufactured Per Year: 55 2026 Bugatti Veyron F.K.P. Hommage frontThe Bugatti story has plenty of twists and turns since Ettore Bugatti created the company in 1909. After years of financial ups and down, it was the legendary Prof. Dr. Ferdinand Karl Piëch from the VW Group that changed the company's fortunes. In the '90s, Piëch was on holiday with his family, when his son spotted a model of a Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic. Piëch bought two models. He took the second one to a VW Board meeting, and instructed his team to acquire the Bugatti brand. The Veyron followed, powered by Piëch's W12 engine, and the rest is history.Today, around 20 of the best technicians in the VW Group work in the Bugatti factory in France, spending around six months building a single car by hand. Like the one-of-one FKP Hommage model. Koenigsegg Estimated Cars Manufactured Per Year: 50 2025 Mansory Koenigsegg Jesko front, three-quarterSwedish gearhead Christian von Koenigsegg's factory turns out only about 50 cars per year, with waiting lists stretching towards 2028. That's because Koenigsegg cars are not only exclusive and crazy fast, they also come with all the latest inventions from the Swedish company, including the brand's Engage Shift System (ESS) gearbox, which combines a manual six-speed gearbox with a nine-speed automatic 'box. All Koenigsegg cars and their drivetrains are manufactured in-house by the company's highly skilled artisans. The Koenigsegg Jesko is powered by a twin-turbocharged V8 engine producing up to 1,600 hp. Just lovely. Pagani Estimated Cars Manufactured Per Year: 45 2025 Pagani Huayra Codalunga Speedster front 3/4 overheadIt doesn't get much more exclusive and fast than the Pagani Huayra Codalunga Speedster. Only 10 Codalunga Speedsters, powered by a twin-turbocharged V12 engine with 864 hp, will be made. The Speedsters will be hand-built alongside a handful of other Pagani cars in the company's manufacturing plant near Modena. The Argentine-Italian company builds just around 45 cars per year, and has been creating some of the world's finest hypercars since 1992, making some of the fastest cars on the planet. The company employs only about 160 people. As a comparison, Ferrari's factory, which is just down the road, employs more than 5,000 people, working around the globe. Gordon Murray Automotive (GMA) Estimated Cars Manufactured Per Year: 30 2023 Gordon Murray T.50s Niki Lauda front, three-quarterThe waiting list for legendary Formula One and supercar designer Gordon Murray's latest hypercars does not stretch into months, but years. That's because Gordon Murray Automotive, based in the UK, not only limits the number of units it builds of each model, the full capacity of the facility where the cars are built by hand is only around 30 cars per year.Take the Gordon Murray T.50s Niki Lauda model, for instance. It weighs just 1,800 pounds, the 3.9-liter V12 Cosworth engine produces 761 hp, and a total of just 25 cars will ever be made. The hand-built hypercar is not only exclusive, it is also one of the fastest cars on the planet. Hennessey Estimated Cars Manufactured Per Year: 20 2025 Hennessey Venom F5 Revolution LF front, three-quarterAmerican go-very-much-faster company Hennessy makes a lot of muscle cars, trucks, and SUVs go stupid fast. But these are all just bolt-on types of jobs. It is the company's F5 hypercar that is the crown jewel, and the only car it completely manufactures in-house. This includes the mega-powerful Fury V8 engine, which is rated at up to 2,031 hp in the one-of-one Revolution LF version. Yep, that's a 6.6-liter, twin-turbocharged V8 engine, making more than 2,000 hp, driving the rear wheels... and it's got a manual six-speed gearbox.Late in 2025, Hennessey announced that it was expanding its manufacturing facility in Texas, hoping to churn out more than the 20 F5s it currently builds by hand. The new facility will also help Hennessey to increase the number of modified cars it can churn out in a year to an expected 1,300 units in 2026.Sources: Bentley, Morgan, Toyota, Rolls-Royce, Pagani, Bugatti, Gordon Murray Automotive, Hennessey, Koenigsegg, Aston Martin.
