Tesla has always done a good job of keeping its lineup nice and lean, avoiding the portfolio bloat you see with some automakers, selling five or six cars that all do the same thing. We figured now is as good a time as any to round these electric vehicles up and rank them by reliability, because, in another year, there will only be three Teslas on sale, and where's the fun in reading a "top three" list? For all the jokes about the Tesla Cybertruck's build quality issues, loose panels, electrical malfunctions and so on, what we're seeing with the 2026 model years is that Tesla has worked out a lot of the kinks even in its most troubled offerings. Nothing on this list ranks below a 78/100 when it comes to the J.D. Power Quality & Reliability score, and a Tesla will typically cost you hundreds of dollars less than you'd expect to spend on maintenance in the luxury segment. Let's get into it.The following models have been selected based on their availability for the 2026 model year. We have evaluated each model's reliability based on J.D. Power Quality & Reliability ratings, annual cost of maintenance according to CarEdge, and total number of NHTSA recalls, and arranged the list from least to most reliable. 2026 Tesla Model Y Tesla's Mid-Size Crossover Starts At $39,990 2026 Tesla Model Y Standard Exterior sideThe 2026 Model Y has already been subjected to five recalls in total. Among the less-concerning recalls, 172 units were recalled for blocked windshield wiper nozzles, 48 were recalled for improperly tightened seat assembly fasteners, six for loose ground wires preventing the horn from sounding, and 260 were recalled for reverse lights failing to illuminate. More worrying would be a recall for 7,925 units which may see loss of power owing to failed battery pack contactors. The Model Y is one of the more affordable cars on this list when it comes to maintenance, but we have to rank it as the least reliable of the bunch, for its high number of recalls and its low Q&R rating. Still, this should go to show that even the least reliable Tesla is pretty darn reliable. The 2026 Model Y Has Worked Most Of The Kinks Out To find any reports on the Model Y on CarComplaints, you'll have to go all the way back to the 2023 model year, when a driver reported weak HVAC performance, accompanied by a hissing noise, at just 7,100 miles. The driver did not report a cause or solution for the issue, but we'd bet it was covered by warranty.A pair of complaints on the NHTSA website pertain to self-driving issues with a Tesla Robotaxi operating in Austin, Texas. Note that these reports don't come from drivers, or even from passengers, but from people who observed worrying behavior, including a Robotaxi stopped at a green light, and one going nine miles per hour over the limit in a 30 mph zone. These complaints prove that we're not quite ready for fully-automated traffic, but they don't really count as reliability issues. 2026 Tesla Model X The Mid-Size SUV Starts At $91,990 2021 - 2025 Tesla Model X front, on roadThe Model X is in its final model year, with Tesla having announced the car's discontinuation after 2026. It will be a shame to see this history-making SUV go, as the Model X, and the Model X Plaid, in particular, spearheaded the movement towards supercar-tier EVs at an affordable price. While we wouldn't call the Model X unreliable by any stretch of the imagination, its annual maintenance costs come out a bit high compared to some of the other models on this list. Still, you're spending less to keep a Model X running than you would to maintain a Honda Civic ($563, according to CarEdge). The Gull-Wing Doors Are A Common Failure Point Model X owners in the r/ModelX subreddit report a handful of build quality issues as some of the most common problems, with gull-wing door issues being fairly common. One driver reports the sensor failing, which can interfere with the doors safely opening and closing. Most issues facing Model X owners will be electrical, and covered by warranty. This is a running theme across this whole list, in fact. Even the most worrying problems faced by Tesla owners are usually covered by warranty, and the consenus among drivers is that Tesla is probably the least troubled car you'll ever own. It's rare that something breaks, and, when it does, Tesla usually foots the bill. 2026 Tesla Cybertruck The Futuristic Full-Size Pickup Starts At $79,990 2026 Tesla CybertruckFor the 2026 model year, the Tesla Cybertruck's only recall at the moment is for front lights, including the light bar, which may be too bright, creating glare for oncoming traffic, and violating federal light standards. The problem can be addressed with a simple over-the-air update to dim the lights a bit.Despite this, and the highest annual maintenance costs, the Cybertruck's 86/100 Q&R rating situates it right in the middle of the pack as the third-most reliable Tesla on the market today. In other words, the Cybertruck seems to have overcome a lot of its early build-quality problems to become as dependable as anything else bearing the Tesla brand. You might say it's still one of the ugliest cars on the road, but hey, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The 2026 Cybertruck Has Fewer Common Issues Than You'd Guess The 2026 Cybertruck has generated three complaints with the NHTSA so far. One was for multiple system warnings during normal driving conditions, including disabled rear axle steering, inability to charge, turning radius limited, and service required. Another complaint was registered for passenger door control failure, and a third for problems with self-driving, reporting that the car "hallucinates, violating driving while impaired laws." 2026 Tesla Model S Tesla's Full-Size Sedan Starts At $86,990 2026 Tesla Model STesla's full-size Model S currently shows zero active recalls for the 2026 model year, it's one of the cheapest models on this list to maintain, and it boasts the second-highest Q&R rating (tied with the Model 3). All of these factors combined qualify the Model S as the second most-reliable of the bunch.Unfortunately, the Model S is on its way out, being discontinued alongside the Model X. If you want to be the first owner of a brand-new Tesla Model S, 2026 is your last chance to make it happen. Memorize The Location Of Your Manual Door Handle Release Tesla Model S owners in the r/TeslaLounge subreddit report minor build quality issues like squeaky seats. Issues with the retractable door handles are not uncommon, but the handles can be popped out with a manual release lever in front of the window switches. 2026 Tesla Model 3 Tesla's Executive Sedan Starts At $42,490 2026 Tesla Model 3 Standard front 3/4The 2026 Tesla Model 3's sole recall, thus far, sees it included with those 48 Model Ys which were recalled for seat fasteners that were incorrectly tightened. This, paired with the lowest annual maintenance estimate, and the second-highest Q&R rating, makes the Model 3 an easy pick for most reliable Tesla on the market for the 2026 model year. A Handful Of Drivers Have Reported Problems With The Suspension CarComplaints shows a couple of reports for the suspension in the 2026 Model 3. Drivers report creaking from the rear suspension during acceleration and deceleration at an average of 7,500 miles. One driver reports Tesla fixing the problem under warranty, while the other driver did not provide a solution.
