Japan is a hotbed of abandoned rare cars. While in the USA, most legendary JDM cars are wrapped in cotton wool and highly sought-after, it seems rare classics can be left to the elements in hedges and garages in Tokyo and elsewhere. A recent supercar discovery has left all other abandoned cars in its dust (quite literally, it's covered in the stuff). The internet is now going crazy to figure out the backstory of this '90s icon. A Honda NSX-R Is Gathering Dust INn A Tokyo Car Park Reddit user ikelofe just casually posted some pictures of a long-since-used Honda sitting in a garage. But this wasn't a high-mileage Civic or Accord, it's a first-gen NSX-R — the holy grail of Honda's supercar masterpiece. The giveaways, under the layer of grime, are the seven-spoke optional custom-order wheels in Championship White, and the red "H" badge on the nose. The yellow paintwork looks pristine, with the car apparently just parked up one day and never driven again. The Reason For This Rare Honda Being Parked Up Is A Topic Of Discussion HondaThere is a lot of discussion over how the NSX-R came to be apparently abandoned in a garage in a random Tokyo building. Reddit user RadRimmer9000 says it is likely the original owner had the car from new, but has since sadly died. "Japan makes it impossible to buy a car from a deceased person's family (at least I haven't found a way) so it's probably going to rot and eventually be scrapped," they go on to explain. "When the rental spot gets whatever paperwork they need to junk it, the scrap yard can't resell it because without the title they down 'own it' and you'll not be able to get a title. You might be able to buy a few parts from it if you're lucky." Whatever the reason, it seems this NSX-R could be destined to stay in the garage for a long time to come. The NSX-R Is One Of Honda's Most Special Creations Ayrton Senna helped hone the NSX into the masterpiece that it is. He also famously wore loafers and white socks while he drove an NSX-R around Suzuka in the early '90s. The NSX-R got rid of anything unnecessary from the standard NSX. Honda’s engineers binned the air-conditioning, spare tire, stereo, and sound deadening, as well as adding carbon-Kevlar, fixed-back Recaro seats, for a total weight savings of 265 pounds. At the heart of the NSX-R is a 3.2-liter V6. The NSX-R Is A Million Dollar Supercar Via: Bring A Trailer Yes, you read that right. An NSX-R became the first NSX to pass $1 million in 2025 at Broad Arrow’s Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este auction. The white 2003 example sold for €934,375, or just over $1.064 million USD. Honda sold 483 original NSX Type Rs from 1992 to 95, says Hagerty, in right-hand drive and sold only in Japan. Who knows what this yellow example could fetch if anyone can work out a way to get it out of the Tokyo garage it currently resides in.Sources: Hagerty.com
