Last week, Honda dropped the bombshell that it was bailing on its US electric vehicle plans. The 0 Series sedan and SUV as well as the Acura RSX had all gotten the axe, with Honda citing "recent changes in the business environment." More telling, a senior exec said "Honda was unable to deliver products that offer value for money better than that of newer EV manufacturers, resulting in a decline in competitiveness."Ouch. So what about Honda's other EV for the US? No, not the Prologue, which was rumored to be canceled but is apparently sticking around for a bit. We mean the Sony Honda Mobility Afeela, which was to be built by Honda and go on sale soon. Afeela Is a Sony-Honda Joint Sony Honda Mobility The new Afeela was a joint venture between electronics company Sony and automaker Honda. The plan was to build the new electric sedan in Ohio, with Honda's own at a neighboring site. Honda's plant in East Liberty had even started the last steps, doing pre-production trials to make sure it could assemble the vehicles to the high quality standard Sony demanded. So what is happening? Sony Honda Mobility doesn't know yet either. A spokesperson for the company told The Drive that "Sony Honda Mobility is aware of Honda Motor’s decision to pause its EV business in North America. Our parent companies, Sony Group Corporation and Honda, will hold discussions on how this affects SHM, therefore there is no more information that we can speak to at this moment."The spokesperson said that for now, the company is business as usual. That feels like a sign that SHM will keep going, because if it was done for sure, we don't think Honda would allow spending to continue. That said, last week's decision seemed abrupt, so it could be a matter of news getting around the company. Grand Opening Still On The Schedule Sony-Honda SHM is still planning to hold the grand opening of its studio and delivery hub in Torrance, CA. It did push back the event, which was originally scheduled to take place last weekend. This morning, SHM announced it would be held this coming weekend, on March 21. For the grand opening, SHM will have executives, local officials, and it will have a vehicle on hand for reservations and guests to explore. The car company is in a tough spot. The 0 Series was meant to use the same platform, which would have helped economies of scale. But development on the vehicles was already nearly finished, so most of that money has already been spent. The Afeela 1 was also much further along than either of those, with Sony having enough confidence that it was added to the company's Grand Turismo series for PlayStation last August. We've reached out to Honda to try and learn more from that company's perspective. To learn if the company still plans to build the vehicles for SHM, and to try and find out if the Afeela is on, or if it is just waiting for its momentum to run out. We'll keep you updated.
