It's not every day that you can snag a car owned by one of the greatest drivers of all time.The late Ayrton Senna's 1991 Honda NSX will be auctioned off by RM Sotheby's in October as part of its upcoming London sale. The next year, he moved to McLaren, who were also powered by Honda, and the rest is history. Over the next four seasons, he'd win three drivers' championships (placing second the one other year), which made him a legend.Ayrton Senna's 1991 Honda NSXIt was during this time that Honda was working on the NSX, its answer to the supercars coming out of Germany and Italy at the time. Who better to call on during the development of the "New Sportscar Experimental" than the best race car driver in the world? While testing the prototype, the Brazilian found its chassis to be "too fragile," according to the auction house. He suggested stiffening its frame, which the company would do by 50 percent, and refining its suspension. These changes helped Honda achieve its goal of creating a high-performance vehicle that could also function as a daily driver.The first-gen NSX, sold in North America as an Acura, would go on sale in 1991, which also happened to be the year Senna would win his third and final drivers' championship. As part of an agreement between Honda and the driver, an NSX was imported to Portugal for his personal use. Chassis no. T000233 is finished in Formula Red with a contrasting black roof over a black leather interior. The vehicle is powered by a high-revving 3.0-liter V-6 mated to a five-speed manual that makes 270 hp and 252 ft lbs of torque. That may not sound like much by today's standards, but the original NSX could sprint from zero to 60 mph in 5.2 seconds and reach a top speed of 168 mph.Inside Senna's NSXSenna drove the car extensively while in Portugal, including using it to get to the country's grand prix in 1991. It is also featured in the documentary Ayrton Senna: Racing Is In My Blood, but its most famous appearance was in a photo shoot where the driver, dressed in a button-down and jeans, can be seen washing the vehicle with a garden hose.AdvertisementAdvertisementSenna's NSX is scheduled to cross the block during RM Sotheby's London sale, which will be held on Saturday, October 31. The auction house expects the car to sell for between $700,000 and $1.1 million.
